This paper proposes a dynamic model to describe and forecast the dynamics of the coronavirus disease COVID-19 transmission. The model is based on an approach previously used to describe the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) epidemic. This methodology is used to describe the COVID-19 dynamics in six countries where the pandemic is widely spread, namely China, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, and the USA.

This paper presents five different statistical methods for ground scene prediction (GSP) in wavelength-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The GSP image can be used as a reference image in a change detection algorithm yielding a high probability of detection and low false alarm rate. The predictions are based on image stacks, which are composed of images from the same scene acquired at different instants with the same flight geometry.

The present work expands the application of Puck and Schürmann Inter-Fiber Fracture criterion to fiber reinforced thermoplastic 3D-printed composite materials. The effect of the ratio between the transverse compressive strength and the in-plane shear strength is discussed and a new transition point between the fracture conditions under compressive loading is proposed. The recommended values of the inclination parameters, as well as their effects on the proposed method, are also discussed.

In vitro and in vivo experiments were undertaken to evaluate the solubility, apatite-forming ability, cytocompatibility, osteostimulation, and osteoinduction for a series of Nb-containing bioactive glass (BGNb) derived from composition of 45S5 Bioglass. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) revealed that the rate at which Na, Ca, Si, P, and Nb species are leached from the glass decrease with the increasing concentration of the niobium oxide. The formation of apatite as a function of time in simulated body fluid was monitored by 31P Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Objective: This paper presents a method for breath-by-breath estimation of regional respiratory mechanics without the need for special manoeuvres (such as inspiratory pause or low-flow inflation) using electrical impedance tomography (EIT) associated with pressure/airflow waveforms.
Approach: We developed a method to estimate regional parameters using the regional impedance fraction, by multiplying it by global flow and volume waveforms. A volume-dependent elastance model was used to obtain compliance, resistance, volume-independent (E ), and volume-dependent (E ) components.

The present paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling and design of control laws for a small non-rigid multi-rotor airship constituted of an oblate-spheroid helium balloon coupled with an electric-powered hexa-rotor airframe. The vehicle is assumed to operate in windless and low-speed conditions. A six-degree-of-freedom nonlinear dynamic model is derived for it using the Newton-Euler approach and considering, among other efforts, a restoring torque due to the displacement of the balloon's center of buoyancy above the vehicle's center of mass and the added-mass effect resulting from the air-structure interaction.

An animal's home-range can be expected to encompass the resources it requires for surviving or reproducing. Thus, animals inhabiting a heterogeneous landscape, where resource patches vary in size, shape and distribution, will naturally have home-ranges of varied sizes, so that each home-range encompasses a minimum required amount of a resource. Home-range size can be estimated from telemetry data, and often key resources, or proxies for them such as the areas of important habitat types, can be mapped.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is regarded as a complex arrhythmia, with one or more co-existing mechanisms, resulting in an intricate structure of atrial activations. Fractionated atrial electrograms (AEGs) were thought to represent arrhythmogenic tissue and hence have been suggested as targets for radiofrequency ablation. However, current methods for ablation target identification have resulted in suboptimal outcomes for persistent AF (persAF) treatment, possibly due to the complex spatiotemporal dynamics of these mechanisms.

The choice of areas for nature conservation involves the attempt to maximize the benefits, whether by carrying out an economic activity or by the provision of Ecosystem Services. Studies are needed to improve the understanding of the effect of the extent and position along the watershed of restored areas on soil and water conservation. This study aimed to understand how different restoration strategies might reflect in soil conservation and sediment retention.

Complex networks are often organized in groups or communities of agents that share the same features and/or functions, and this structural organization is built naturally with the formation of the system. In social networks, we argue that the dynamic of linguistic interactions of agreement among people can be a crucial factor in generating this community structure, given that sharing opinions with another person bounds them together, and disagreeing constantly would probably weaken the relationship. We present here a computational model of opinion exchange that uncovers the community structure of a network.

Social surveys have been the conventional means of evaluating the annoyance caused by transportation noise. Sampling and interviewing by telephone, mail, or in person are often costly and time consuming, however. Data collection by web-based survey methods are less costly and may be completed more quickly, and hence, could be conducted in countries with fewer resources.

This paper presents the second part of a study aiming at the error state selection in Kalman filters applied to the stationary self-alignment and calibration (SSAC) problem of strapdown inertial navigation systems (SINS). The observability properties of the system are systematically investigated, and the number of unobservable modes is established. Through the analytical manipulation of the full SINS error model, the unobservable modes of the system are determined, and the SSAC error states (except the velocity errors) are proven to be individually unobservable.

This work concerns analytical results on the role of coupling strength in the phenomenon of onset of complete frequency locking in power-grids modelled as a network of second-order Kuramoto oscillators. Those results allow estimation of the coupling strength for the onset of complete frequency locking and to assess the features of network and oscillators that favor synchronization. The analytical results are evaluated using an order parameter defined as the normalized sum of absolute values of phase deviations of the oscillators over time.

The expressive generation of construction and demolition waste is stimulating several studies for reusing this material. The improvement of soft soils by concrete compaction piles has been widely applied for 40 years in some Brazilian cities. This technique is used to improve the bearing capacity of soft soils, allowing executing shallow foundations instead of deep foundations.

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is the main source of bibliometric indicators known by the scientific community. This paper presents the results of a study of the distributions of the first and second significant digits according to Benford's law (BL) of the number of articles, citations, impact factors, half-life and immediacy index bibliometric indicators in journals indexed in the JCR Sciences and Social Sciences Editions from 2007 to 2014. We also performed the data analysis to country's origin and by journal's category, and we verified that the second digit has a better adherence to BL.

Background: The influence of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films on bacterial leakage through the interface between abutments and dental implants of external hexagon (EH) and internal hexagon (IH) designs was evaluated.
Methods: Film deposition was performed by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Sets of implants and abutments (n = 30 per group, sets of 180 implants) were divided according to connection design and treatment of the abutment base: 1) no treatment (control); 2) DLC film deposition; and 3) Ag-DLC film deposition.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in economically developed countries and the second leading cause of death in developing countries. Malignant brain neoplasms are among the most devastating and incurable forms of cancer, and their treatment may be excessively complex and costly. Public health decision makers require significant amounts of analytical information to manage public treatment programs for these patients.
