Two permanently-open inlets, Knysna estuarine bay and Keurbooms Lagoon, and the only temporarily-open Swartvlei estuary are three adjacent warm-temperate water bodies that differ in their size, morphology and hydrography but which nevertheless all support extensive beds of the endangered seagrass, Nanozostera capensis. To investigate whether their varied environmental conditions influence the compositional structure of the functional guilds of seagrass-associated macrobenthos, the relative abundance and patchiness of the 28 identifiable guilds occurring subtidally along their main channels were examined, including in relation to the spatial patchiness in abundance displayed by their whole macrobenthic assemblages. Two markedly different functional-group structurings were apparent, without intermediate states: one overwhelmingly dominated by local but highly abundant, epifaunal microgastropods (Alaba pinnae, 'Assiminea' capensis and 'Hydrobia' knysnaensis) that feed on leaf-associated periphyton, and the other in which this guild although present was insignificant. It was not apparent why, unusually from a global or even South African perspective, some beds were microgastropod dominated but others not. Spatial variation in microgastropod abundance appeared largely responsible for the patchiness displayed by the whole benthic assemblages, although the abundances of all guilds were significantly patchy. Where abundant, the microgastropod guild obscured underlying relationships between the functional compositional structure of the different estuarine systems and their various corresponding regions, 'mouth', 'lagoon' and 'estuary'. Here regional biogeography might be trumping physiographic, hydrographic and ecological considerations, but the ranges of the endemic microgastropods concerned are particularly data-deficient creating incertainty.

Lead-free electroceramics have attracted significant research interest as alternatives to lead-containing systems due to concerns related to lead's toxicity to human health and the environment. Solid solutions based on bismuth sodium titanate (BNT) and barium titanate (BT), particularly those with compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), such as 0.94 BiNaTiO-0.

Mobile robots that simultaneously have fast speeds, sufficient load-carrying capabilities, and multiple locomotive functions have always been challenging to develop. Here, we introduce a liquid-amplified electrostatic rolling (LAER) mechanism, which elegantly integrates actuation and adhesion into a streamline single-degree-of-freedom structure. Based on this, we developed a rigid tethered LAER roller (0.

To investigate the axial compressive behavior of CFRP-PVC square tube-embedded aluminum concrete columns, five specimens and one control specimen without I-shaped aluminum were tested under uniaxial compression, with the number of CFRP layers and spacing as variable parameters. The failure modes, load-displacement responses, and mechanical properties such as peak load, ductility, stiffness, and energy dissipation were systematically analyzed. Results showed that the incorporation of I-shaped aluminum improved the peak load and ductility by an average of 48.

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) are attracting significant attention owing to their compositional tunability and structural robustness. However, the identification of specific compositional combinations that yield a single-phase structure in HEOs remains unclear owing to the immense combinatorial complexity inherent in multielement systems. This study adopts a materials informatics approach that integrates experimental synthesis data with machine learning to identify key compositional factors enabling single-phase HEO formation via solid-state synthesis.

The size and composition of local species pools are, in part, determined by past dispersal events. Predicting how communities respond to future disturbances, such as fluctuating environmental conditions, requires knowledge of such histories. We assessed the influence of a historical dispersal event on community assembly by simulating various scales of dispersal for 240 serpentine annual plant communities that experienced a large shift from drought to high rainfall conditions over three years.
