Herbal formulations (HFs) are not properly regulated in Nigeria, and this is typical of several African countries. This is in addition to the lack of appropriate scientific/medical tests required for medications. Most producers/marketers lack evidence of the product's safety and effectiveness raising concerns on the overall safety of the HFs which are widely used across the country. This study therefore aimed to investigate the contamination levels, associated health risks and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in HFs sold in Bayelsa but produced across Nigeria. Fifty samples of the commonly known effective HFs were purchased from multiple locations and subjected to extraction using dichloromethane/n-hexane (1:1, v/v). Thereafter, the extracts were analysed using gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry. The contamination levels of the 16-USEPA PAHs varied between < LOQ and 1.67 µg kg. The 3-rings were the predominant PAHs in the HFs. The concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) were below the European Commission allowable limit of 10 µg kg. The risk estimated using different models indicated the absence of health risk from consuming these HFs. The diagnostic ratios showed that the PAHs predominantly originated from pyrogenic sources. We recommend continuous monitoring and adequate regulations of PAHs and other hazardous pollutants in the HFs.

Background: Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection transmitted to humans by ingestion of contaminated unpasteurized dairy products or via direct or indirect contact with infected animals. It is characterized by nonspecific symptoms like fever and joint pain, and laboratory findings including anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, or rarely pancytopenia. Here we report a case of brucellosis with thrombocytopenia that did not improve despite anti-brucella treatment and required intravenous immunoglobulin treatment.

Sulfidized zero-valent iron (S-ZVI) holds promise in the remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbons. However, S-ZVI is susceptible to corrosion in aquifers with elevated dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. This study demonstrates, for the first time, that a trade-off between the passivation and oxidative corrosion of aged S-ZVI can be achieved in the presence of silicate to promote its dechlorination performance on trichloroethylene.

The use of mercury (Hg) in artisanal gold mining in San Martin de Loba (SML), Bolivar, Colombia, poses significant environmental and health risks. This study aimed to evaluate total mercury (T-Hg) concentrations in chicken feathers (Gallus gallus) and soils from SML, and compare them with those obtained in a reference site without mining activity (Arjona). A total of 40 chickens and 30 soil samples were taken in SML, along with 31 chickens and 21 soil samples in Arjona.
