Background: This study comprehensively evaluated the impact of aperture shape controller (ASC) on volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) clinical treatment planning.
Methods: A total of 248 VMAT plans for head and neck, prostate, post mastectomy breast, gastric MALT lymphoma, rectum, and Lung SBRT for treatments performed between 2018 and 2023 were retrospectively enrolled. These treatment plans were divided into two groups: before (ASC-OFF group) and after (ASC-ON group) the clinical implementation of ASC. The performance of ASC in terms of plan complexity was evaluated by between group comparisons of the multi-leaf collimator (MLC) modulation complexity score (MCS) and jaw tracking complexity score (JTCS), plan quality using dosimetric parameters, and plan deliverability.
Results: The overall MCS and JTCS of the ASC-OFF and ASC-ON groups were 0.318 and 0.369 (p < 0.001) and 2.85 cm and 2.98 cm (p = 0.10), respectively. In the ASC-ON group, the complexity of MLC motions was significantly lower and the complexity of jaw motions higher. In addition, most dosimetric parameters were comparable between groups or better in the ASC-ON group. There was no significant difference in the gamma passing rate of 3%/2 mm between the two groups, although at tighter criteria, the gamma passing rate was higher in the ASC-ON group.
Conclusions: The use of ASC reduced the complexity of MLC motions without compromising the plan quality. Furthermore, this study found that ASC allows jaw tracking to be more effective.

A novel medium-current (up to 20 mA), low normalized beam emittance (<1 π mm mrad) electron cyclotron resonance microwave H+ ion source has been developed at the Center for Energy Research in Budapest, Hungary. This high-stability design targets an energy ripple below 1% while delivering a continuous or pulsed proton beam with adjustable pulse duration (0.1-10 ms) and frequency (0.

Pollen apertures are specialized regions on the pollen surface that receive little to no exine deposition, forming distinct structures important for pollen function. Aperture number, shape, and positions vary widely across species, resulting in diverse, species-specific patterns that make apertures fascinating from both cell-biological and evolutionary perspectives. Aperture formation requires developing pollen to establish polarity and define specific regions of the plasma membrane as aperture domains.

Although intelligent superwettability materials with tunable wettability have been extensively studied in oil-water separation, they still exhibit several limitations including singular dimension of response, nondurable surface modification, and inadequate on-demand separation capabilities. Herein, we propose an ingenious strategy that combines pH-responsive polymer and shape memory material to achieve intelligent dual-regulation of surface wettability and pore size. A porous double-regulated foam (DRF) is obtained by uniformly mixing epoxy resin with PMMA--PDEAEMA solution and one-piece curing it through salt template method.

Purpose: Despite the increasing use of craniofacial morphometry worldwide, there is a lack of population-specific normative data based on high-resolution 3D skull models for the Turkish population. This study aimed to fill this gap by investigating cephalic, nasal, and orbital indices using precise measurements derived from 3D models, and to evaluate their variations according to sex, age, and laterality.
Methods: In this retrospective study, multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) data of 240 adults (120 males, 120 females) without any deformity or trauma were used.
