Background: Poor linear growth over time can lead to stunting, a significant public health problem in low-resource settings. Catch-up growth, the process of accelerated growth following growth faltering, is important for mitigating the long-term impacts of early stunting. This study aimed to identify key predictors of growth over time, stunting and catch-up growth among children in rural Tanzania.
Methods: We evaluated 182 children from the Etiology, Risk Factors, and Interactions of Enteric Infections and Malnutrition and the Consequences for Child Health and Development cohort, whose anthropometric measurements were collected at six points from birth to 11.5 years. We assessed outcomes of height-for-age z-score (HAZ), stunting and catch-up growth using mixed-model linear and logistic regression to assess associations of maternal education, household income, socioeconomic status, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and thyroid function tests. We defined stunting as HAZ ≤-2 and catch-up growth both as stunting resolved from age 2 years to 11.5 years and a HAZ increase of >0.5 from 2 years to 11.5 years.
Results: Cohort participants exhibited a moderate amount of catch-up growth, with per cent stunting decreasing from 72.6% at 2 years to 39.0% at 11.5 years. Maternal education, household income, socioeconomic status and IGF-1 were positively associated with HAZ (eg, IGF-1 point estimate 0.141±0.067, p=0.036) and negatively associated with odds of stunting across time points, while thyroid-stimulating hormone was negatively associated with HAZ and positively associated with odds of stunting (all p<0.05). For the definitions of catch-up growth, only IGF-1 was associated with odds of catch-up growth by both definitions (both p<0.01). Because of the potential for IGF-1 to be associated with maturation (and potential early growth cessation), we also assessed regression models that included IGF-1, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, revealing that IGF-1 remained associated with catch-up growth (p<0.05).
Conclusions: These findings highlight the need for comprehensive interventions that address socioeconomic, hormonal and biological factors to promote catch-up growth and reduce stunting in resource-limited settings. The results offer valuable insights towards improving child health outcomes in similar contexts.

Background: Twin and singleton growth might be adaptively different to maximise survival in a shared intrauterine environment, translating to smaller average twin birthweight. We aimed to compare growth trajectories and risks of overweight and obesity between twins and singletons.
Methods: We leveraged height, weight, and BMI data from two large and ongoing nationally representative cohorts, the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-Child and Young Adult (NLSY-CYA), that have prospectively collected data from children born in the UK between Sept 1, 2000, and Jan 11, 2002, and participants born in the USA between December, 1970, and January, 2008, respectively, every 2-3 years from birth to adulthood.

Objective: Among extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW; <1000 g) or extremely preterm (EPT; <28 + 0 weeks) infants, we aimed to describe size indicators at 18 to 24 months of corrected age and growth from neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) discharge to follow-up and to examine infant and maternal determinants of those outcomes.
Methods: We studied 7301 ELBW/EPT children from 77 Vermont Oxford Network member hospitals. Continuous size indicators at 18 to 24 months were z scores of weight, length, head circumference, and body mass index based on World Health Organization standards.

During the rearing period, fish may be exposed to fasting due to low or high temperatures, transportation, handling, and other stressors, while they may catch-up the growth differently after supplying the feed. The aim of this study was to investigate the compensatory growth (CG) response of juvenile Siberian sturgeon after restricted feeding. In the first phase (60 days), triplicate groups of fish were subjected to feed restriction (25%, 50%, and 75% of the amount needed to reach satiation, respectively) or satiation feeding (control) and in the second phase all treatment groups were fed to satiation for an additional 60 days.

Understanding the long-term relationship between economic and ecological activities is crucial for sustainability research, yet quantitative evidence of its evolution remains limited. This study applies high-throughput culturomics analysis to newspaper corpora, analysing ecological and economic words from newspapers spanning more than two centuries in the United Kingdom (an early industrializer) and over a century in China (a latecomer). We quantify the occurrence, diversity, and relative dynamics of ecological and economic words since industrialization, revealing shifts in subcategory composition and relative dominance.
