The Role of Neuroglia in Cognitive Longevity.

Neurochem Res

September 2025

International Translational Neuroscience Research Institute, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, 310053, Zhejiang, China.

The concept of the central nervous system (CNS) reserve emerged from the mismatch often observed between the extent of brain pathology and its clinical manifestations. The cognitive reserve reflects an "active" capacity, driven by the plasticity of CNS cellular components and shaped by experience, learning, and memory processes that increase resilience. We propose that neuroglial cells are central to defining this resilience and cognitive reserve.

Do turtles get cancer?

Bioscience

September 2025

School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, England, United Kingdom.

Turtles are renowned for their extreme longevity and tremendous range in body size. Theoretically, large, long-lived organisms should face higher cancer risks because of increased cell numbers and lifetime cellular turnover, yet cancer appears to be exceptionally rare in turtles. In the present article, we synthesize the current knowledge on cancer prevalence in turtles, drawing from zoo necropsies, pathology reports, and comparative oncology studies, and present new data spanning additional species that reinforce this pattern.

Fast Scan Cyclic Voltammetry (FSCV) is a widely used electrochemical technique to detect rapid extracellular dopamine transients . It employs carbon fiber microelectrodes (CFMEs), but conventional 7 µm diameter CFMEs often suffer from limited mechanical durability and reduced lifespan, hindering their use in chronic monitoring. To improve mechanical robustness and long-term functionality, we fabricated 30 µm diameter CFMEs and modified their geometry via electrochemical etching to form cone-shaped tips.

Higher blood lipid levels after the transition to menopause in two forager-horticulturalist populations.

Evol Med Public Health

July 2025

Center for Evolution and Medicine, Arizona State University, Life Sciences C, 427 East Tyler Mall, Tempe, AZ 85281, USA.

Background: Reproduction affects health and longevity among females across the life course. While significant focus has been devoted to the role of menarche, menopause remains understudied. Most menopause research is conducted in industrialized populations, where the risk of cardiovascular diseases increases progressively during the menopausal transition.

Background: Schizophrenia (SZ) is associated with chronic oxidative stress in the patient's body. Previous studies revealed an increased copy number of genes for 47S pre-ribosomal RNA (pre-rRNA) in SZ patients. In this study, levels of oxidative stress and factors involved in the adaptive response to chronic stress (rDNA transcription) were, for the first time, compared in blood cells of patients with catatonic SZ(C) and paranoid SZ(P), chronic forms of schizophrenia, as well as healthy controls (HC).
