Article Abstract

Polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun fibers are attractive due to their great potential in tissue engineering, drug release control and disposable medical supplies. However, there is still a lack of summary of research progress over the past decade. In this paper, we summarized the basic research on the regulation of the structure and morphology of PLA electrospinning fibers, as well as the application of PLA fibers in tissue engineering, drug controlled-release, and disposable medical supplies, and point out the advantages and challenges of PLA electrospun fibers in the field of biomedicine. In particular, the research progress of disposable medical supplies was reviewed for the first time. PLA can be electrospun alone or with other biocompatible polymers or inorganic materials. Moreover, the desired topology can be obtained by adjusting the electrospinning parameters to better meet biomedical requirements. By reading this paper, researchers in the field of materials science, biological science and medicine can learn about the work of others, leading to greater collaboration and better work in the near future, which will pave the way for mass production and large-scale application of PLA electrospun fibers.

Electrospun PLA-gelatin composite scaffolds loaded with 3D-derived extracellular vesicles for repairing tympanic membrane perforation in rats.

Int J Biol Macromol

Department of Research and Development, Huaqing Zhimei (Shenzhen) Biotechnology Co., Ltd, Shenzhen 518107, Guangdong, China.

Background: The tympanic membrane is an oval, funnel-shaped, translucent structure that plays a crucial role in the auditory system. Individuals suffering from tympanic membrane perforation often experience symptoms such as a sensation of fullness in the ear, hearing impairment, and other discomforts, all of which significantly diminish the quality of life. Currently, autologous temporalis myofascia is the commonly utilized material for repair; however, it is limited by its scarce availability, the need for secondary surgical intervention, and suboptimal recovery outcomes.

In this study, multifunctional nanocomposite membranes were fabricated using biopolymeric polylactic acid (PLA) and cellulose acetate (CA) composites via electrospinning. The hydrophobic nanocomposite membranes were reinforced with varying concentrations of silicon dioxide (silica/SiO) nanoparticles. The developed PLA-CA-SiO nanofibrous membranes are characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE- energy-dispersive SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), elemental mapping, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques.

Biomaterials modified by antibacterial substances, including nanoparticles, open new opportunities for the effective treatment of infected wounds. Unfortunately, most publications focused only on experiments in vitro, with limited understanding of their potential for the clinic. This study evaluates the effectiveness in vivo of electrospun chitosan/polylactic acid (Ch/PLA) membranes enriched with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for purulent wound treatment.

Chitosan and ibuprofen functionalized electrospun nanofiber membrane modulates inflammatory response and promotes full-thickness abdominal wall repair.

Electrospun nanofiber membranes are promising for abdominal wall repair. Our previous studies have shown that while electrospun nanofiber-bundle membranes promote cellular and tissue infiltration through their porous architecture, they also induce an elevated foreign body response (FBR) that impedes tissue integration and remodeling. In this study, we functionalized electrospun polylactic acid (PLA)/gelatin (Gel) nanofiber-bundle membrane with chitosan (CS) and ibuprofen (IBU) to improve its biological performance for abdominal wall repair.
