The persistent occurrence of economically motivated food frauds and adulterations, causing substantial economic losses to enterprises and endangering consumers interests, critically impedes the sustainable development of the food industry. Spirits, characterized by high brand premiums and distinct geographical attributes emerge as primary fraud vectors. This review highlights the two predominant research directions in spirit authentication through bibliometric analysis, including the authenticity of geographic origin and the "illegal addition" adulteration. A unified methodology - integrating multi-analytical techniques, data-driven methods, and chemometric techniques - enables a systematic solution for the molecular fingerprint traceability. Emerging tools, particularly sensors and artificial intelligence technologies, offer significant potential for monitoring and predictive warning. Furthermore, disadvantages and challenges regarding the use of these approaches in operational limitations and implementation barriers of spirit authentication are investigated. This review systematically evaluates current detection strategies and emerging solutions, aiming to enhance regulatory efficiency and sustainable food authentication management for spirits.

This study presents the development and validation of a rapid and direct chemometric method for detecting the adulteration of cachaça, a typical Brazilian spirit made from fermented and distilled sugarcane juice, with ethanol fuel using a portable near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer. Chemometric models were built employing principal component analysis (PCA), soft independent modeling of class analogies (SIMCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). A total of 124 cachaça samples of different origins were used to build the models, 62 authentic and 62 deliberately adulterated with ethanol fuel (in the range 1-40 % v/v, with a 40 % ethanol solution).

Yarning has been a widespread practice for First Nations people across the Australian continent for approximately 70,000 years. Yarning as a process of communication has been designed to support authentic and relational connections between people, Country, ancestors, spirits, and the more-than-human realms. In recent scholarship, the process of yarning has emerged in a western context as being a legitimate research method for gathering rich qualitative data.
