Article Abstract

The strain effect of high-entropy intermetallic (HEI) catalysts on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance remains largely unexplored, primarily due to the significant challenges associated with characterizing and calculating the intricate local coordination environments. Here, we design a nitrogen (N)-doped L1-ordered PtCoNiFeCu intermetallic catalyst supported on Ketjenblack carbon (N-HEI/KB), and reveal the origin of the sub-angstrom strain in N-HEI and its impact on ORR performance by combining atomic-scale characterization and theoretical calculations. The synergistic interplay of the sub-angstrom strain, the pinning effect of metal-N bonds, and the high-entropy effect contribute to the competitive stability of N-HEI/KB catalysts, providing high current density of 1388 mA cm at 0.7 V after 90,000 cycles even under harsh heavy-duty vehicle conditions. These findings broaden the avenues for designing high-performance high-entropy intermetallic cathode electrocatalysts.

Direct Imaging of Radiation-Sensitive Organic Polymer-Based Nanocrystals at Sub-Ångström Resolution.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

Departamento de Ciencia de los Materiales, Ingeniería Metalúrgica y Química Inorgánica, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad de Cádiz, 11519 Puerto Real, Cádiz, Spain.

Seeing the atomic configuration of single organic nanoparticles at a sub-Å spatial resolution by transmission electron microscopy has been so far prevented by the high sensitivity of soft matter to radiation damage. This difficulty is related to the need to irradiate the particle with a total dose of a few electrons/Å, not compatible with the electron beam density necessary to search the low-contrast nanoparticle, to control its drift, finely adjust the electron-optical conditions and particle orientation, and finally acquire an effective atomic-resolution image. On the other hand, the capability to study individual pristine nanoparticles, such as proteins, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and polymers, with peculiar sensitivity to the variation in the local structure, defects, and strain, would provide advancements in many fields, including materials science, medicine, biology, and pharmacology.

Interstitial solutes, such as carbon in steels, are effective solid-solution hardening agents. These alloying elements are believed to occupy the octahedral interstices in body-centered-cubic (bcc) metals. Using deep-sub-angstrom-resolution electron ptychography, here the first experimental evidence to directly observe individual oxygen atoms in a highly concentrated bcc solid solution-the (TiNbZr) O C N medium-entropy alloy (MEA)-is provided, whereby the interstitial sites in which the oxygen atoms are located are discerned.

The ability to control the atomic-level structure of a solid represents a straightforward strategy for fabricating high-performance catalysts and semiconductor materials. Herein we explore the capability of the mechanically controllable surface strain method in adjusting the surface structure of a gold film. Underpotential deposition measurements provide a quantitative and ultrasensitive approach for monitoring the evolution of surface structures.

The modern aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopes (AC-STEM) have successfully achieved direct visualization of atomic columns with sub-angstrom resolution. With this significant progress, advanced image quantification and analysis are still at the early stages. In this work, we present the complete pathway for the metrology of atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images.
