Article Abstract

Background: Gender-affirming breast augmentation (GABA) with implants is most commonly compared with cosmetic breast augmentation. A better comparator is tuberous breast augmentation (TBA). Anatomically, both feature relative medial pole deficiency, constricted breast footprints, and parenchymal herniation through the areola. Technically, both often require radial scoring and inframammary fold lowering. This review summarized techniques and outcomes of GABA and TBA.

Methods: A systematic review was performed in 3 databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Database of Controlled Trials from 2000 to 2024. In total, 1319 articles were identified, of which 29 met inclusion criteria: outcomes-based primary literature detailing GABA and/or TBA. Meta-analysis was performed, but due to the noncomparative nature of the included studies, no comparative statistics were performed.

Results: In total, the GABA cohort included 3234 breasts in 1617 patients from 13 studies, and the TBA cohort featured 1093 breasts in 583 patients from 16 studies. Cohort characteristics were similar between groups. Surgical characteristics included primarily prepectoral augmentation via inframammary fold incision in the GABA cohort and dual-plane augmentation via periareolar incision in the TBA cohort. In both the GABA and TBA cohorts, rates of common complications, including explantation, infection, hematoma, and seroma, were all below 1%. The rate of reoperation was 4.5% in the GABA cohort and 11.9% in the TBA.

Conclusions: This systematic review found low rates of complications in GABA and confirmed that GABA uses standard surgical techniques, which are routinely used in other breast procedures. Our findings demonstrate a similar complication profile between GABA and TBA.

Stakeholders in the breast implant industry in Korea have recently experienced a crisis from breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma and the first Korean case of a medical device fraud. We compared the short-term safety between the microtextured devices that are commercially available after the occurrence of breast implant crisis in Korea. The current study was conducted in a cohort of Korean women who had received an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty for aesthetic purposes between November 14, 2020 and October 13, 2022.

Continuation of breastfeeding after surgical removal of AQUALIFT due to mastitis: A case report.

JPRAS Open

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Keio University School of Medicine, 35 Shinanomachi, Tokyo Shinjuku 160-8582, Japan.

Several complications have been reported following copolyamide filler injections for breast augmentation leading many countries to issue warnings regarding the use of nonabsorbable fillers. While previous reports have described breast complications necessitating surgical intervention after filler injections, none have explicitly documented the continuation of postoperative breastfeeding. Here, we report a rare case in which a woman with a history of breast augmentation using AQUALIFT developed mastitis following childbirth and the initiation of breastfeeding.

Multi-Enzymatic Cascade Catalysis in Photodynamic Nanozymes for Augmenting Radiotherapy of Breast Cancer.

Adv Healthc Mater

September 2025

State Key Laboratory of Radiation Medicine and Protection, School of Radiation Medicine and Protection, Collaborative Innovation Center of Radiological Medicine of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions, Soochow University, Suzhou, 215123, China.

Overcoming resistance to radiotherapy remains a significant challenge in breast cancer management. A one-step coordinated synthesis of BODIPY-integrated photodynamic nanozymes (FZBNPs) that facilitate an orthogonal catalytic cascade for radiotherapy potentiation is presented. The engineered FZBNPs simultaneously alleviate tumor hypoxia through catalase-mimetic oxygen (O) generation and amplify reactive oxygen species (ROS) production via peroxidase-like activity, synergizing with BODIPY-mediated singlet oxygen (O) generation under 660 nm light irradiation.

Mastectomy and breast augmentation outcomes among nonbinary, transgender, and cisgender adults.

J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg

August 2025

Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, United States; Department of Surgery, Patient-Reported Outcomes, Value and Experience (PROVE) Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, United States.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate epidemiologic characteristics and postoperative complications among nonbinary, transgender, and cisgender adults undergoing mastectomy or breast augmentation. Comparable postoperative complication rates were observed between gender modality cohorts undergoing breast augmentation, but higher complication rates were observed among cisgender patients following mastectomy, likely due to variations in clinical indications and technique. These results underscore the safety of chest surgery for gender-diverse patients.

Introduction: Implant-based breast reconstruction after skin-sparing mastectomy remains one of the most frequently used methods of breast reconstruction in the US. Patients with large, ptotic breasts often face poorer outcomes. We hypothesized that implant-based breast reconstruction with auto-augmentation techniques can minimize problems with acellular dermal matrices (ADM) by using less, and providing the benefit of prepectoral placement.
