Article Abstract

We present a method of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) in transmission configuration, which allows one to obtain the frequency-resolved complex-valued optical constants of the material, and to simultaneously determine the thickness of the investigated material sample with sub-micrometer precision. The thickness estimation achieves deep-subwavelength precision of the order of λ/1000. Our method is based on the numerical solution of transcendental transmission equations of Fourier-transformed main and echo THz pulses. It can be universally applied to materials with arbitrary absorption and refractive index dispersion as long as the echo THz signal in transmission is clearly discernible. As a first demonstration, several common dielectric materials such as MgO, AlO, GaAs, and SiO were characterized. We also demonstrate that the conventionally employed THz time-of-flight thickness measurement approach leads to a systematic error when applied to absorptive materials.

The presence of water significantly impacts the physical stability of amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) by altering polymer molecular mobility. This study investigates the influence of low levels of absorbed water on the molecular dynamics and glass transition behavior of amorphous poly(vinylpyrrolidone--vinyl acetate) (PVP/VA). Melt-quenched PVP/VA discs were conditioned at controlled relative humidities (RH 8.

The thermodynamic equilibrium assumption often invoked in modeling ion migration in solid-state materials remains insufficient to capture the true migration behavior of Li ions, particularly in less-crystalline superionic conductors that exhibit anomalously high Li ion conductivity. Such materials challenge classical frameworks and necessitate a lattice dynamics-based perspective that explicitly accounts for nonequilibrium phonon interactions and transient structural responses. Here, we uncover a phonon-governed Li ion migration mechanism in garnet-structured superionic conductors by comparing Ta-doped LiLaZrTaO (LLZTO4) to its undoped analogue, LiLaZrAlO (LLZO).

Fungicides are essential agrochemicals for the prevention and control of plant diseases. Counterfeit products, often lacking enough active ingredients, can compromise disease management and pose risks to agricultural safety. Precise quantification of the chemical structure and concentration of active components enables reliable authentication of fungicide formulations, ensuring their efficacy in crop protection and supporting the quality and safety of agricultural production.

The integration of terahertz (THz) technology with metasurfaces has attracted attention as it enables the fabrication of compact, high-performance, and tunable photonic devices. However, extensive investigation of metasurfaces was limited to a narrow THz range or manipulating a single mode of electromagnetic waves, absorption, reflection, or transmission, without achieving multi-band or broadband switching. This capability constrains metasurface adaptability in modern and reconfigurable systems.

We propose a Φ-shaped resonator nested with VO patches to achieve dual-band switchable phase modulation in the terahertz range. The sample is fabricated using a surface micromachining process and characterized by a terahertz time-domain spectrometer. The results indicate that, when the VO is in the insulated state, two resonance peaks at 0.
