Article Abstract

Background & Aims: Metabolic syndrome is prevalent in Asian populations, but it remains to be established if polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) play a preventive role. We aimed to investigate the association between the longitudinal change in plasma n-3 and n-6 PUFA and MetS incidence and potential mediating role of inflammation on the association between baseline plasma PUFA and MetS incidence.

Methods: Prospective data were collected from 1303 males and females (aged 21-75 years) in a Multi-Ethnic Cohort at baseline and at a median follow-up of 6 years. Anthropometric measures and blood pressure were measured during physical examinations. Plasma levels of PUFA and the inflammatory marker glycoprotein acetyls (GlycA) were quantified using nuclear magnetic resonance. MetS was defined as meeting ≥3 of the following components: abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, and elevated fasting glucose. Mixed effects logistic regression was used to investigate the prospective associations, and Generalised Structural Equation Modeling was used to assess mediation.

Results: Plasma total n-3 PUFA [odds ratio (OR) 0.55 per 1 % of total fatty acids increment], docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (OR 0.30), total n-6 PUFA (OR 0.55) and linoleic acid (LA) (OR 0.70) were inversely associated with incidence of MetS (all p < 0.001). Regarding MetS components, higher plasma total n-3, total n-6 PUFA, and LA were associated with lower odds of elevated triglycerides, reduced HDL cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, and elevated fasting glucose (p < 0.05). Using mediation analyses, GlycA significantly mediated the associations between baseline plasma total n-6 PUFA (20 %) and LA (50 %) and MetS.

Conclusion: Higher plasma levels of total n-3, DHA, total n-6, and LA are associated with a lower risk of MetS. The inverse association between LA concentration and MetS incidence may be mediated by reduction in systemic inflammation, however, further studies are warranted to verify.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary inclusion of different carrot forms on production results, carcass traits, meat quality, fatty acid (FA) composition, vitamin content, and feed costs in Cherry Valley broiler ducks. A total of 240 one-day-old males (initial body weight of 55.2 g) were allocated to 4 treatments (n = 60; 6 replicates of 10 birds): control (CD; 100 % commercial diet), CFL (CD + 2 % carrot flakes), RAWC (80 % CD + 20 % raw carrot), and CPOW (CD + 2 % carrot powder).

The sustainability of aquaculture is challenged by limited fishmeal and fish oil supplies, key sources of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5 n-3), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3) and arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4 n-6), essential for fish health and product quality. Polychaetes represent a promising alternative. While marine polychaetes show complete LC-PUFA biosynthetic pathways involving elongases (Elovl), front-end desaturases (Fed), and methyl-end desaturases (ω des), freshwater species remain poorly studied.

Background And Aim: Maternal fatty acid (FA) status is thought to influence fetal growth. However, limited studies have examined maternal fatty acid status in mothers delivering SGA (small for gestational age) babies in India, where the prevalence of SGA births is high. This study investigates maternal and cord FA status in mothers delivering SGA and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) babies.

Understanding fish physiological responses to thermal acclimation is crucial for addressing global climate change threats to aquaculture sustainability. We investigated lipid and fatty acids in the muscle and liver of the catfish Horabagrus brachysoma acclimated to 26 (control), 31, 33 and 36 °C for 30 days. The total lipid, phospholipid, triglyceride, and free fatty acid significantly decreased, while cholesterol significantly increased (P < 0.
