Stable isotopes are well established as routine and reliable tracers of nutrient flux and trophic structure. However, inferring trophic ecology from isotopic data is challenging due to variability at the food web base and systematic differences in biochemical fractionation during metabolism. Analyses of isotope systems from multiple elements with contrasting fractionation drivers may resolve some sources of variance, strengthening connections between measured isotopic variations and inferred ecological processes. This study combines carbon (δC), nitrogen (δN), sulfur (δS), and mercury (ΔHg/δHg) isotopes to investigate trophic niches of coastal and oceanic elasmobranchs across two ecosystems in northwestern Mexico. In the Pacific Ocean, similar δC, δN, ΔHg, and δHg values suggest that elasmobranchs relied on common pelagic resources, likely from upwelling events. In the Gulf of California, coastal species with higher δC and δN values and lower ΔHg and δHg values fed on prey isotopically distinct from those offshore, allowing classification trees to identify foraging habitats more accurately than in the Pacific. Meanwhile, δS values systematically decreased from oceanic to coastal species at both sites and were highlighted as the most discriminative isotopic tracer by random forests. This study advocates for integrating complementary isotopic analyses to better comprehend biogeochemical and ecological mechanisms.

Pharmaceutical contaminants reaching natural aquatic ecosystems can affect fish behaviour, modifying activity patterns, foraging behaviour and antipredator responses. While laboratory-based studies can offer key insights, assessing the ecological relevance of these findings requires field-based approaches. Therefore, we examined the effects of oxazepam, a widely prescribed anxiolytic drug, on the behaviour of a cyprinid fish (the common roach, ) in the wild, combining slow-release exposure implants with continuous tracking via acoustic telemetry.

The Atlantification of the Arctic is driving a northward habitat shift of many cetaceans, including sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). As Arctic warming continues to decrease sea ice extent and contributes to the change in species distributions, it is crucial to study how the distribution patterns, habitat, and the demographic structure of sperm whale populations may continue to change. In this study, we assess the temporal presence of echolocating sperm whales on the continental slope southwest of the Svalbard archipelago and compare it with acoustic backscatter and temperature as a proxy for biomass.

The gelada (), Ethiopia's only endemic primate and the last surviving graminivorous cercopithecid, was studied in Susgen Natural Forest, South Wollo, to examine seasonal variations in activity budgets and ranging ecology. From February to August 2023, encompassing both dry and wet seasons, 3519 behavioral scans were collected from 1680 group observations using instantaneous scan sampling at 15-min intervals (07:00-17:00 h). Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and nonparametric tests (Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney ), while home ranges were mapped via minimum convex polygon (MCP) and kernel density estimation (KDE).
