Article Abstract

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are a significant impediment to communal goat production, causing considerable economic losses, making their control imperative. The objective of this study was to determine farmers' knowledge, attitudes and practices on the control of GIN in communal goat flocks. A structured close-ended questionnaire was used to conduct face-to-face interviews with communal goat farmers ( = 384) across four local municipalities in uMkhanyakude District Municipality. Elderly farmers were 1.4 times more likely to underdose compared to younger farmers ( < 0.05). Diarrhoea and emaciation were the most reported clinical signs observed in goat flocks. Farmers were aware of clinical signs of GIN infections ( < 0.01) on their farms. However, lack of professional veterinary assistance ( < 0.01), low socioeconomic status and low levels of education ( < 0.01) reduce the effectiveness of GIN control. Farmer's inability to read manufacturer's instructions was associated with incorrect dosing ( < 0.05), which contributed to ineffective management and worsened the impacts of GIN infections. An immediate intervention is required from various stakeholders to achieve sustainable nematode control, with a particular emphasis on women, the elderly farmers and those with low levels of education.

Investigating microbial and metabolic dynamics in bovine and goat milk during refrigerated storage for 5 days.

Raw milk is commonly stored at 4 °C prior to processing, a practice that can facilitate psychrotrophic proliferation, and milk physicochemical alterations and quality deterioration. This study aimed to elucidate the dynamic changes and interrelationships among microbiota, physicochemical parameters, and metabolite profiles in raw bovine and goat milk during refrigerated storage at 4 °C over a 5-day period. The results showed that both bovine and goat milk exhibited significant increases in bacterial counts, titratable acidity, zeta potential, and protein particle size, alongside decreases in pH and lipid particle size, as well as changes in color during refrigerated storage at 4 °C.

Mediterranean ecosystems have been grazed by livestock for thousands of years. While considered both a major anthropogenic stressor and a potential habitat conservation tool, the effects of livestock grazing on vertebrate populations remain poorly understood. Our study focused on goat and sheep grazing on a large island off the coast of Greece in order to shed light on (1) the nature of the relationship between livestock grazing and vertebrate assemblages, and (2) the mediating mechanisms.

Buffaloes play a vital role in Bangladesh's livestock sector, contributing significantly to the nation's milk and meat production. However, their productivity remains below potential due to limited genetic capacity, poor reproductive performance, and inadequate health and management practices. This review critically synthesizes findings from scientific literature, field studies, and national reports to assess the status of buffalo production, reproductive efficiency, genetic improvement efforts, and disease management strategies in Bangladesh.

Combining market surveys and participative approaches to map small ruminant mobility in three selected states in northern Nigeria.

In Nigeria, a huge gap in knowledge on livestock mobility and its role on transboundary disease spread exists. As animals move, so do diseases. Therefore, there is a need to understand how livestock movements can contribute to the circulation and maintenance of infectious livestock diseases which can impede the design of particular surveillance and control tactics in the event of outbreaks.
