Article Abstract

Bacterial flocculation is a process in which bacteria aggregate to form cloudy, flake-like clusters known as flocs. While this phenomenon is commonly associated with water treatment, it also has interesting industrial applications, particularly as a method for cell immobilisation. Escherichia coli, extensively employed in industrial processes, typically does not possess inherent flocculation ability. In this study, we found that certain bisbenzimidazole derivatives can rapidly induce flocculation in E. coli (K-12 MG1655) in a structure-dependent manner. Among others, high-resolution microscopy (SEM, fluid AFM) revealed a dense fibrillar network within the flocs, initially suggestive of an extracellular matrix. Mechanistic investigations demonstrated that this phenomenon cannot be linked to the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Our findings suggest that flocculation arises from the self-assembly of bisbenzimidazole derivatives into supramolecular fibres that anchor to bacterial membranes. These results uncover an atypical flocculation process distinct from charge neutralisation or EPS-mediated pathways, broadening the potential applications of bisbenzimidazole derivatives in bacterial immobilisation.

In the present study, an efficient method for the expression and purification of recombinant HIV Rev protein with a C-terminal hexahistidine tag was proposed. Noteworthy, this method circumvents the precipitation of the protein into inclusion bodies and their subsequent aggregation during purification. It does not necessitate denaturing isolation conditions, in contrast to currently widely used protocols.

A novel and efficient protocol for the microwave-assisted synthesis of diversely substituted 2,2'-bisbenzimidazol-5,6'-dicarboxylic acid (BIMCA) from the reaction of 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid with oxalic acid has been developed, which proceeds through sequential nucleophilic addition and electrophilic substitution in accordance with the Philips method. The synthetic utility of this strategy was demonstrated by the concise, one-pot synthesis of (BIMCA) and metal complexes. (BIMCA) with a [{Fe(salen)}O] Schiff base ligand complex and new benzimidazole coordination compounds with double oxygen [(BIMCA){Fe(salen)}] ligand complexes were obtained.

In this work, a series of dibenzimidazole derivatives 1-4, act as highly reversible colorimetric and fluorescent pH chemosensor, were designed and synthesized. Excellent reversible pH response of these sensors could be found by a specific pH change through obvious fluorescent color changes. The response is not affected by common cations (including Al, Cu, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Mg, Na, K, Ni, Pb and Zn) and anions (including F, Cl, Br, I, ClO, HPO, HSO, HCO and CHCOO).

To investigate the effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) mediated by hematoporphyrin derivatives (HPD) on the proliferation of small cell lung cancer H446 cells and bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells. H446 cells and BEAS-2B cells were cultured in vitro with different concentrations of HPD(0, 5, 10, 12, 15, 20 μg/mL) for 4 h, and then irradiated with 630 nm laser with different energy densities (0, 25, 50, 75, 100 mW/cm2). Cell viability of H446 cells and BEAS-2B cells were detected by CCK8 assay.
