Electrosurgical techniques are used during surgery to cauterize, and their damaging effects have primarily been documented in terms of tissue necrosis, charring, and localized heat accumulation. Metallic implants as well as the surgical blade can experience incidental electrosurgical current arcing that results in the generation and transfer of melted metallic particles. This work examines the composition, particle size distribution, and chemical state of the melted alloy surfaces and particles produced in vitro.

Purpose: Gubernaculum-cremaster complex development is hormonally regulated and abnormal in a cryptorchid rat model. Using cell tracking techniques and imaging we studied myogenic phenotypes and fates in the fetal rat gubernaculum-cremaster complex.
Materials And Methods: Embryonic day 17 gubernaculum-cremaster complexes were labeled with CellTracker™ or the DNA synthesis marker EdU (5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine), or immobilized in Matrigel® and grown in culture.

Background And Purpose: The robotic monopolar scissors tip cover accessory (TCA) is an insulation device that prevents current leak from surfaces on the instrument other than the scissors tip. Reports of insulation failure and patient injury have been made but not systematically studied. We investigate the incidence of TCA failure and potential mechanisms that lead to malfunction.

Background: Surveys indicate that up to 90% of general surgeons and gynecologists use monopolar radiofrequency during laparoscopy and 18% have experienced visceral burns. Monopolar electrosurgery compared with other energy sources is associated with unique characteristics and inherent risks and complications caused by inadvertent direct or capacitive coupling or insulation failure of instruments. These dangers become particularly important with the reemergence of single-port laparoscopy, which requires close proximity and crossing of multiple intraabdominal instruments outside the surgeon's field of view.
