Chee Kiang (Ethan) Ewe is an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellow working in the lab of Oded Rechavi at Tel Aviv University, Israel. Here he studies how small RNAs regulate gene expression and, more specifically, how these enable epigenetic inheritance. Ethan has been an active member of the preLights community, acting as one of its ambassadors this year, and is now one of Development's Pathway to Independence programme fellows. We caught up with him to find out what drives and excites him, and what he hopes to achieve in his own lab.

Age-related skeletal muscle decline is a major contributor to frailty, functional impairment, and loss of independence in advanced age. This process is characterized by selective atrophy of type II fibers, impaired excitation-contraction coupling, and reduced regenerative capacity. Sutter Care at Home (SCAH), part of the not-for-profit Sutter Health integrated system, serves Northern California's Valley and Bay Areas through 14 licensed home health and nine hospice agencies, many of which reach rural communities. Like many home health organizations, SCAH has faced a persistent registered nurse (RN) shortage, challenging its ability to maintain care delivery standards. Spiro-OMeTAD has remained the benchmark hole-transporting material (HTM) in state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells, owing to its favorable energy level alignment and excellent interfacial compatibility. However, its practical implementation is critically hindered by the intrinsic instabilities introduced by conventional dopants such as lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and 4-tert-butylpyridine (tBP). While these dopants enhance electrical conductivity, they concurrently initiate multiple degradation pathways-including ionic migration, radical deactivation, and moisture/thermal-induced morphological failure-thereby compromising device longevity and reproducibility.
