Iron-gall inks (IGI) show considerable variability due to the wide range of historical recipes used in their preparation. Previous research has explored how factors such as pH and iron concentration affect IGI structure and how to detect these changes. This study focuses on variability induced by different tannins interacting with iron. Iron-polyphenolic complexes were systematically synthesized using both commercial tannins and oak gall extracts prepared following historical recipes. All starting materials were characterized via spectrophotometric assays and, for commercial tannins, infrared spectroscopy. The resulting complexes were analysed using Raman, IR, and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopies to build a reference dataset. This enabled the identification of spectral markers offering insight into the materials used in IGI production through a non-destructive, multi-analytical approach. Finally, the method was applied to the "Black Hours" manuscript (property of the Austrian National Library) to investigate its ink composition, highlighting both the strengths and limits of the applied techniques.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Ancient Egyptian sickness categories are poorly described, making it a challenge to correlate use of materia medica with sickness experience. Nevertheless, many identified ingredients are reported to have therapeutic potential, often used to support Egyptological interpretations of categories. Crucially, these interpretations fail to consider the impact of ancient processing methods.

This study presents a novel approach to determine the composition of masonry mortars and their types from cement, lime, and cement-lime using an artificial neural network (ANN). It also allows the preparation of mortar recipes for the conservation of historical masonry objects with properties similar to the original ones, but using currently available raw materials. An ANN was trained using a set of cement, lime, and cement-lime mortars with known compositions.

The Old English medical text, Bald's Leechbook, represents the most comprehensive medical treatise written in the vernacular. Book 1 is arranged broadly in the order of head to foot, presenting herbal recipes alongside occasional comments on their efficacy, details of the symptoms and etiology of illnesses. Though in a minority, several recipes involving magic, religion, and symbolism appear.

In this article, we review the historical approach to the discovery of medicines, human drug testing, and the development of medical ethics. We cover the period from prehistoric times until 1906, when the Pure Food and Drug Act was introduced in response to the poor quality of food products and medicines. In the first part of the article, we discuss the period before the 16th century when drug testing relied on observation, trial and error, prescriptions and recipes, and the first use of pharmacopoeias to ensure medication safety.
