Article Abstract

Beavers are ecosystem engineers and keystone species that protect freshwater resources and increase biodiversity. Beaver reintroductions are promoted for amphibian conservation, yet their impact on (Bd), a pathogen linked with amphibian population declines worldwide, remains unclear. We investigated the abiotic and biotic drivers of Bd prevalence in Columbia spotted frogs () and western toads () in 20 beaver-modified and 23 non-beaver wetlands in Glacier National Park, USA. We found that beavers increased wetland hydroperiod, which was associated with higher Bd prevalence. However, beavers also reduced wetland canopy cover, which was associated with lower Bd prevalence. Our models also predicted higher Bd prevalence associated with higher adult density of both species of amphibians, although species' densities were similar in beaver-modified and non-beaver wetlands. These results suggest that beavers have a cumulatively negligible net effect on Bd prevalence owing to their effects on both hydroperiod and canopy cover, which is encouraging for amphibian conservation. Our findings also suggest that decreasing canopy cover may be a potential management option to reduce Bd prevalence. In addition, these findings indicate that beaver-mimicking restoration projects may harm amphibian populations if they increase wetland hydroperiods without reducing canopy cover.

Wild mushrooms can be an important source of protein and essential amino acids, however very little is known about the environmental factors affecting the content of these compounds. In our study, we investigated the influence of soil properties (soil type, C/N ratio, pH) and tree stand characteristics (tree diversity, canopy cover, understory cover, and the proportion of deciduous trees) on total protein and essential amino acids (Valine, Leucine, Isoleucine, Phenylalanine, Lysine, Methionine, Arginine, Histidine) contents in seven wild-growing mushroom species (Macrolepiota procera, Rhodocolybia butyracea, Russula cyanoxantha, R.heterophylla, Lactifluus vellereus, Armillaria mellea s.

Forest landscapes play a significant role in both global and local carbon cycles, mitigating climate change by sequestering atmospheric carbon. To maintain carbon stock and enhance sequestration from the atmosphere, it is important to quantify the effects of driving factors on carbon stock. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the effects of storing factors, maintaining factors, and disturbing factors on carbon stock, and to analyze the individual and combined effects of multiple factors.

Objective: To investigate the association between urban residential greenspace and cardiovascular disease (CVD) comorbidity at breast cancer (BC) diagnosis among older women, and explore regional, racial/ethnic, and socioeconomic differences.

Study Design: This is a cross-sectional analysis of a population-based registry data.

Methods: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare linked database, data on women aged 66-90 diagnosed with BC (2010-2017) were analyzed.

Tropical cyclones can significantly impact mangrove forests, with some recovering rapidly, whilst others may change permanently. Inconsistent approaches to quantifying these impacts limit the capacity to identify patterns of damage and recovery across landscapes and cyclone categories. Understanding these patterns is critical as the changing frequency and intensity of cyclones and compounding effects of climate change, particularly sea-level rise, threaten mangroves and their ecosystem services.

Socio-economic status (SES), neighbourhood environments and their interactions can influence cognitive health in late life. Studies on this topic have examined a limited number of SES and environmental indicators and are mostly cross-sectional. We analysed data from 1160 individuals aged 60-64 years at baseline, with four assessments of cognitive functions across 12 years.
