Conventional selenium recovery poses environmental and sustainability challenges. To address this, we propose a one-step method for the separation and recovery of copper and selenium from dissolved CuSe in a choline chloride-urea deep eutectic solvent (DES). In this process, copper, having an average particle size of 0.277 μm, is electrodeposited on the cathode and selenium nanorod powder, having an average particle aspect ratio of 14.52, forms around the anode. Of note, CuSe is effectively converted to Cu and Se in the DES at 80 °C, achieving yields of 69.81 and 73.38%, respectively, after 48 h of scaled-up electrolysis. Importantly, the recyclability of the DES was confirmed, yielding the stable recovery of metallic copper and monolithic selenium through secondary dissolution and the subsequent re-electrolysis of CuSe. This approach presents an innovative, green, and sustainable strategy for recovering valuable elements from other types of copper anode slimes.

Metal micronutrient dyshomeostasis appears to be involved in the risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Selenium (Se), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are essential for the defence against oxidative stress (OS), a key factor in the maintenance of synaptogenesis and neurogenesis. This study assessed plasma concentrations of Se, Cu, and Zn, along with their ratios, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GPx1) activity in Algerian children with ASD.

This fifth article in the series presenting reference values for nutrients in human milk describes minerals. The Mothers, Infants and Lactation Quality (MILQ) and Early-MILQ studies collected human milk samples throughout the first 8.5 mo of lactation in 1242 well-nourished women in Bangladesh, Brazil, Denmark, and The Gambia.

Background: Carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) is a major contributor to cerebrovascular incidence and mortality, yet its etiology in non-dyslipidemic individuals remains poorly understood. Emerging evidence suggests that environmental metal exposure may play a critical role in CAS development.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective matched case-control study involving 1290 non-dyslipidemic middle-aged and elderly individuals to examine the association between urinary metal exposure and CAS.

The aim of this study was to investigate oxidative stress markers in patients with embedded fragments (PEF) using thiol-disulfide homeostasis and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA). The study consisted of a PEF group and a control group. Blood or urine metal concentrations were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).
