Background: Research priorities guide research activities, funding and resources within health services. To ensure that research efforts are meaningful and impactful, it is vital that organisational research agendas reflect the priorities of both healthcare consumers and staff, alongside broader national and international research frameworks. This paper outlines a research priority-setting project conducted across two hospitals in Western Australia, aimed at identifying shared research priorities through a collaborative and inclusive approach.

The intimate relation between astrocytes and blood vessels was proposed by Camillo Golgi in 1870. Santiago Ramon y Cajal subsequently introduced the idea of astrocytes as regulators of functional hyperaemia accompanying neuronal activity in 1895. In 2003 Giorgio Carmignoto, Micaela Zonta, Tullio Pozzan and their colleagues revealed mechanisms of astrocytic control over vasodilatation.

Building on the established success of hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP) and emerging normothermic platforms, machine perfusion is poised to guide a journey toward 2040, transforming organ transplantation into an era of integrated preservation, viability assessment, and ex situ therapy. While renal HMP today reduces delayed graft function and improves graft survival, the next two decades will centre on adaptive platform trials in normothermic perfusion, predictive AI-driven biomarkers, and unified registries to validate robust surrogate endpoints. Centralised Assessment and Reconditioning Centres (ARCs) will streamline 24/7 workflows, combining advanced imaging, molecular assays, and gene or cell therapies to repair and optimise grafts ex-vivo.

Explicit references to a distinct field or discipline of risk appeared about 40-50 years ago, but it is only recently that the term "risk science" has been commonly used. To many scholars working with practical risk and safety issues, the risk field has been considered a rather narrow field and school of thought, mainly focusing on risk assessments and numbers. The scope of contemporary risk science is, however, wide, covering knowledge on all aspects of risk, including assessment, perception, communication, and management of risk.
