The deposition of pre-peer-reviewed scientific articles in repositories as preprints has been practised for over 50 years. Recently, the popularity of this practice has surged, particularly in chemistry and physics disciplines. In the life sciences, bioRxiv is a popular preprint server; however, its usage varies greatly between fields. Preprinting is not common practice within comparative physiology, with the number of manuscripts submitted lagging far behind that seen in other fields. In this Perspective, we dig into the possible explanations for this difference. We explore common concerns regarding the deposition and use of preprints and highlight some relevant reasons why preprints are helpful to the field of comparative physiology. We strongly believe that use of preprints can help to improve transparency in the scientific publishing process and will be an important component of publishing for all fields of science in the future.

Animals communicate information primarily via their calls, and directly using their vocalizations proves essential for executing species conservation and tracking biodiversity. Conventional visual approaches are frequently limited by distance and surroundings, while call-based monitoring concentrates solely on the animals themselves, proving more effective and straightforward than visual techniques. This paper introduces an animal sound classification model named SeqFusionNet, integrating the sequential encoding of Transformer with the global perception of MLP to achieve robust global feature extraction.

Annually, millions of humans and animals suffer from chronic and acute pain, creating welfare and quality of life concerns for both humans and animals who suffer this pain. In developing new therapeutic approaches, the challenge is to accurately measure this pain to ascertain the efficacy of novel therapeutics. Additionally, there is a need to develop new and effective analgesic options that may offer alternatives to using opioids that contribute to the opioid epidemic.

Turtles are renowned for their extreme longevity and tremendous range in body size. Theoretically, large, long-lived organisms should face higher cancer risks because of increased cell numbers and lifetime cellular turnover, yet cancer appears to be exceptionally rare in turtles. In the present article, we synthesize the current knowledge on cancer prevalence in turtles, drawing from zoo necropsies, pathology reports, and comparative oncology studies, and present new data spanning additional species that reinforce this pattern.
