Article Abstract

Background: Vitamin D deficiency is a public health concern; however, data on its global prevalence are limited. We reported pooled mean circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration and estimated the prevalence of concentration according to commonly reported thresholds for general, healthy populations worldwide.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Global Index Medicus and grey literature sites. We included cross-sectional and cohort studies published since 2011 that reported circulating 25(OH)D concentration in general, healthy populations of all ages. Using random-effects meta-analysis, we pooled data on circulating 25(OH)D concentration and prevalence estimates according to thresholds by continent, country, latitude, sex, adults/children, season, assay, and study quality. PROSPERO registration: CRD42021242466.

Results: Eligible publications (n = 586) included 2 370 136 eligible participants across 102 countries. The pooled mean (95% confidence interval [CI]) overall circulating 25(OH)D concentration was 53.9 (52.6-55.1) nmol/L (529 publications; 1 412 281 participants). The pooled prevalence of concentration < 30, < 50, and < 75 nmol/L was 18, 47, and 75%, respectively (403 studies; 1 508 830 participants).

Conclusions: Low vitamin D status is prevalent across general, healthy populations worldwide. Governments, health organizations and policy makers could use these findings to identify regions in need of public health strategies for improving vitamin D status.

Background & Aims: Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, findings remain inconsistent. Assessing vitamin D status based solely on total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] may be insufficient, and other metabolites, such as 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [24,25(OH)D] and 3-epimer-25-hydroxyvitamin D [3-epi-25(OH)D], may provide additional insights. This study aimed to examine the association between serum vitamin D metabolite concentrations and cognitive function in older adults.

Vitamin D (VD) plays a critical role in human health, with deficiencies linked to a range of adverse outcomes, including compromised immune function and increased disease risk. While environmental factors such as sunlight exposure and diet influence circulating VD levels, genetic variation is a significant and underappreciated contributor to interindividual differences in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations. This review provides a comprehensive summary of genetic variants in key genes involved in VD synthesis (e.

Relationship Between Total 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Parathyroid Hormone Concentrations During Early Gestation in Indian Women.

A high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) during early pregnancy has been reported globally, along with a high risk of adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. The present cut-off to diagnose VDD during pregnancy is <20 ng/mL of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin-D (25(OH)D) concentration, but there is a lack of consensus on this value. We evaluated this diagnostic cut-off specifically during early pregnancy among apparently healthy Indian women.

: Vitamin D plays an important role in a wide range of health outcomes, including immune regulation, bone metabolism, cardiovascular health, and cancer prevention. However, recent data on the prevalence and risk factors for elevated serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations-indicative of potential vitamin D toxicity-remain limited in Korea. : We conducted a retrospective analysis of laboratory data from individuals who underwent serum 25(OH)D testing between 2020 and 2022.
