Article Abstract

Afforestation with var. in northern China is hindered by soil degradation. This study evaluated a ternary amendment combining sewage sludge (SS), cattle manure (CM), and maize straw (MS) to rehabilitate degraded sandy soils in the Horqin Sandy Land. Five treatments were tested: control (CK), SS (T1), SS + CM (T2), SS+MS (T3), and SS + CM + MS (T4). The ternary amendment (T4) achieved optimal outcomes: soil pH decreased from 8.02 to 7.79, organic carbon increased 2.5-fold, and total nitrogen (127%) and phosphorus (87.5%) were enhanced compared to CK. exhibited a 65.6% greater basal diameter and 29.5% height increase under T4, while heavy metal concentrations (Cd: -54.6%, Cu: -35.1%, Pb: -12.2% and Zn: -27.6%) were reduced. These findings highlight a synergistic waste valorization strategy for dryland afforestation, balancing soil fertility improvement with ecological safety. Future studies should prioritize long-term microbial community dynamics and field-scale validation.

In 2024, highly pathogenic avian influenza A H5N1 caused outbreaks in wild birds, poultry, cows, and other mammals in the United States with 61 human cases also reported by the CDC. Detection of influenza A H5 RNA in wastewater has been previously reported in sewersheds in Texas and North Carolina with nearby impacted dairy herds following the emergence of H5N1 in dairy cows. Here, we conduct retrospective testing of total influenza A and H5 hemagglutinin genes in wastewater as well as present and apply new assays for detection of H1 and H3 genes across a respiratory virus season in an urban California sewershed from September 2023 to May 2024.

Historical application of wastewater treatment sludge (biosolids) has introduced per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into agricultural systems and led to contamination of crops and livestock. Previous work validated a dynamic exposure and population toxicokinetic (DE_PopTK) modeling approach for estimating perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) concentrations in cattle tissues at sites primarily dominated by water contamination. This work expands the efforts to validate the DE_PopTK model at a self-contained beef farm in Maine with PFAS exposures from feed grown on site where soil is contaminated from historical biosolids applications.
