Spinal cord injury (SCI) has been considered a clinically challenging disease that is characterized by local disturbance of the microenvironment, which inhibits post-injury neural regeneration. The simulation of a microenvironment conducive to the regeneration of spinal cord is beneficial for SCI repair. In this study, bioactive composite hydrogels are developed that mimic the regenerative microenvironment of spinal cord for enhanced SCI repair.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes long-term disability and mortality worldwide. The prime pathological players in TBI are neuroinflammation and apoptosis. These pathological changes lead to a limited capacity of regeneration after TBI.

The study shows that RADA-F6 peptide with pH-responsive self-assembling nature can be effectively used as a drug delivery system for the sustained release of a potent anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) at basic pH. As 5-FU contains the aromatic pyrimidine ring, RADA-F6 system is suitable for entrapping an aromatic drug due to effective π-π stacking with phenylalanine and be able to show better controlled release behavior. The stability and controlled release nature of RADA-F6 in different conditions followed by 5-FU entrapment at in silico conditions was confirmed by molecular dynamics simulation taking RADA-16 as control.

We described a modification of the ionic (RADARADARADARADA)(1) peptide or RADA16-I with 4-azidophenyl isothiocyanate via a specific and gentle reaction. The azidated peptide was covalently immobilized on an alkyne-terminated monolayer on Si(111) via the Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction. Detailed characterization using Impedance spectroscopy (IS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy demonstrated high coverage of the RADA 16-I peptide on silicon surfaces.
