BackgroundIn the UK, Black African-Caribbeans (ACs) and South Asians (SAs) have 3-6 times greater risks of developing type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and significantly higher prevalence of vitamin D (vitD) deficiency than White Caucasians. East London is among the areas with the highest prevalence of T2DM and the highest proportion of ethnic minority groups. This ethnic health inequality is ascribed to socioeconomic standing, dietary habits, culture, and attitudes, while biological diversity has rarely been investigated.AimThe study aims to investigate the difference in the postprandial glycemic response (PGR), an independent risk factor of T2DM, between ethnic groups (White Caucasians, SAs, and ACs) in East London and its association with vitD status.MethodsThis acute randomized crossover trial will recruit healthy adults (n = 106) in East London between November 2023 and March 2025. Two test drinks are consumed by participants (a glucose drink containing 75 g glucose and pure orange juice) on different occasions. PGRs are monitored before and after drinking every 30 min for up to 2 h via finger prick. A fasting blood sample obtained via phlebotomy will be used for plasma 25(OH)D and relevant tests. A knowledge/perception questionnaire about vitD and a 4-day food diary (analyzing vitD dietary intake) will also be collected. Data will be analyzed using a multiple linear regression model adjusted by confounding factors (age, gender, body mass index, and body fat percentage).SummaryThe study results will be disseminated through journals and conferences, and target stakeholders.

Background: Most adults with Down syndrome develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology in their 30s, yet research into cognitive health programmes for this group remains limited.
Method: A mixed-methods feasibility randomised control trial (RCT) evaluated an adapted, manualised group-based cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) programme for adults with Down syndrome (N = 12; M = 30) without dementia. Participants were randomly assigned to CST (n = 6) or control (services as usual; n = 6), with assessments at baseline, post-programme, and four-month follow-up by a blinded researcher.

Introduction: Skin cancers primarily affect people of White ethnicity and lighter skin tones, but people of other ethnicities may face diagnostic delays and experience higher mortality, reflecting existing inequities in healthcare. This is the first study showing incidence data from the National Disease Registration Service (NDRS) cancer registry in England for skin cancers stratified by the seven broad ethnic groups.
Methods: We used data from NDRS from 2013-20 to analyse melanoma, acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), and Kaposi sarcoma (KS).

As a life-limiting illness, dementia requires a holistic approach to care, where spiritual support plays a crucial role in helping individuals and their caregivers find meaning and solace. Our aim was to systematically map the research conducted on psychosocial interventions developed to provide spiritual support for people living with dementia and their caregivers from diagnosis and across the disease trajectory. A scoping review was conducted to explore the breadth of research on 'spiritual support' in dementia care, encompassing interventions, service delivery models, programs, toolkits, approaches, and activities.

Microtubule-actin cross-linking factor 1 (MACF1) is a large protein of the spectraplakin family, which is essential for brain development. MACF1 interacts with microtubules through the growth arrest-specific 2 (Gas2)-related (GAR) domain. Heterozygous MACF1 missense variants affecting the zinc-binding residues in this domain result in a distinctive cortical and brain stem malformation.
