Article Abstract

Reflectance spectroscopy is a rapid method for estimating traits and discriminating species. Spectral libraries from herbarium specimens represent an untapped resource for generating broad phenomic datasets across space, time, and taxa. We conducted a proof-of-concept study using trait data and spectra from herbarium specimens up to 179 yr old, alongside data from recently dried and pressed leaves. We validated model accuracy and transferability for trait prediction and taxonomic discrimination. Trait models from herbarium spectra predicted leaf mass per area (LMA) with R = 0.94 and %RMSE = 4.86%. Models for LMA prediction were transferable between herbarium and pressed spectra, achieving R = 0.88, %RMSE = 8.76% for herbarium to pressed spectra, and R = 0.76, %RMSE = 10.5% for the reverse transfer. Discriminant models classified leaf spectra from 25 species with 74% accuracy, and classification probabilities were significantly associated with several herbarium specimen quality metrics. The results validate herbarium spectral data for trait prediction and taxonomic discrimination, and demonstrate that trait modeling can benefit from the complementary use of pressed-leaf and herbarium-leaf spectral datasets. These promising advancements help to justify the spectral digitization of plant biodiversity collections and support their application in broad ecological and evolutionary investigations.

Associations between element mixtures and biomarkers of pathophysiologic pathways related to autism spectrum disorder.

J Trace Elem Med Biol

September 2025

Department of Neurology, Children's Hospital of Fudan University, National Children's Medical Center, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Objective: We previously documented that exposure to a spectrum of elements is associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, there is a lack of mechanistic understanding as to how elemental mixtures contribute to the ASD development.

Materials And Methods: Serum and urinary concentrations of 26 elements and six biomarkers of ASD-relevant pathophysiologic pathways including serum HIPK 2, serum p53 protein, urine malondialdehyde (MDA), urine 8-OHdG, serum melatonin, and urine carnitine, were measured in 21 ASD cases and 21 age-matched healthy controls of children aged 6-12 years.

Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO) is a semiconductor with multiferroic properties, synthesized by the sol-gel method. While static high-pressure studies have advanced our understanding of the phase behavior of BiFeO, the effects of dynamic pressure acoustic shock waves remain unexplored. In this study, BiFeO was subjected to 100 shock pulses with 0.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly reshaping cosmetic surgery by enhancing surgical planning, predicting outcomes, and enabling objective aesthetic assessment. Through narrative synthesis of existing literature and case studies, this perspective paper explores the issue of algorithmic bias in AI-powered aesthetic technologies and presents a framework for culturally sensitive application within cosmetic surgery practices in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Existing AI systems are predominantly trained on datasets that underrepresent MENA phenotypes, resulting in aesthetic recommendations that disproportionately reflect Western beauty ideals.

Adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) constitutes a heterogeneous and expanding patient cohort with distinctive diagnostic and management challenges. Conventional detection methods are ineffective at reflecting lesion heterogeneity and the variability in risk profiles. Artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models, has revolutionized the potential for improving diagnosis, risk stratification, and personalized care across the ACHD spectrum.

The palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction to forge carbon-carbon bonds fundamentally changes the practice of organic synthesis. Herein an isolated palladium catalyst supported on polymeric carbon nitride (Pd/PCN) for efficient cross coupling of bromobenzene and phenylboronic acid at room temperature is reported. It is demonstrated that the Pd/PCN catalyst with a 2 wt% Pd loading achieves the highest mole-specific activity.
