Article Abstract

Erysipelothrix is a genus of opportunistic bacteria of humans and animals. In 2019, a marked increase in infections by the zoonotic bacterium Erysipelothrix in Cook Inlet (Alaska, USA) beluga whales Delphinapterus leucas (CIBs) was detected through routine surveillance. A retrospective study was performed using archival records from 1998 to the present; archived samples from 2006 to the present; colleague interviews; and a literature review. Erysipelothrix was detected in 18 of 63 (28.6%) CIBs necropsied between 2006 and 2023, and when present after 2017, it was the primary cause of death. Erysipelothrix was rarely detected in other species of wildlife, domestic animals or in the environment in and around Cook Inlet during the same period. Sequencing of isolates demonstrated several different lineages, negating the possibility of infection from a common source or single strain. The lack of documented previous occurrence of Erysipelothrix in or near Cook Inlet indicates that this is likely an emerging phenomenon.

A boundary condition remapping technique for computational fluid dynamics simulations of nasal exhalation.

Background And Objective: During exhalation, complex geometry in the larynx generates the pharyngeal jet, where higher velocity air is directed to the rear of the airway, influencing airflow downstream in the nasal passage. This study investigates the impact of boundary condition settings on the accuracy of airflow simulations in truncated airway geometries during exhalation, focusing on the nasopharynx and nasal passage. In addition to traditional inlet profiles, we tested a new method of remapping a profile from a complete airway to a truncated airway.

Some of us recently discussed the problems existing in describing the channels that permit interventricular shunting. We offered suggestions for improvement, particularly when assessing the channel that is found when both arterial trunks arise from the morphologically right ventricle. Our proposals engendered significant debate, with several criticisms appearing in an editorial commentary.

We report fatal tularemia in stranded beluga whales in Cook Inlet, Alaska, USA. Francisella tularensis was detected by nanopore metagenomics, confirmed by quantitative PCR and immunohistochemistry, and characterized as F. tularensis subspecies holarctica by multilocus sequence typing.

Objective: To compare rates of and risk factors for hospitalizations among Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE) participants taking metformin and randomly assigned to insulin glargine U-100, glimepiride, liraglutide, or sitagliptin.

Research Design And Methods: Intention-to-treat (ITT) (N = 5,047) and on-assigned-treatment (AT) (N = 4,830) data sets were used. Baseline differences between those hospitalized versus those not hospitalized were assessed.
