Article Abstract

Background: Experiencing bias and stigma are social determinants of health (SDoH). Recently, internalized weight bias (IWB) has been included as an SDoH in obesity medicine. This study examined the association of IWB with other pillars of SDoH and how IWB contributes to cumulative social disadvantage for people living with obesity.

Methods: A cross-sectional, web-based survey was conducted in the United States (May-December 2022) with a sample of adults with obesity or overweight. Multiple linear regression was performed to evaluate the relationship between WSSQ (higher score indicating experiencing more IWB) and other pillars of SDoH.

Results: Participants who reported race as Black (adjusted mean difference [95% CI] -3.86 [-5.21, -2.52];  < 0.001) or multiracial (-3.26 [-5.37, -1.16];  = 0.002) had significantly lower total WSSQ scores than those who self-identified as White race. Participants who experienced negative social interactions due to weight had significantly higher total WSSQ scores (7.04 [5.81, 8.27];  < 0.001) than those who did not.

Conclusion: The study showed that IWB is associated with certain other pillars of SDoH. Findings highlight the need for a comprehensive and patient-centric approach to managing individuals with greater IWB, which may contribute to a higher cumulative social disadvantage and, consequently, worse health outcomes.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a growing global health concern, particularly among individuals with obesity. While metabolic and behavioral risk factors have been well described, the role of psychosocial determinants, such as weight stigma, remains underexplored.

Objectives: To assess the association between sociodemographic variables, healthy lifestyle behaviors, and internalized weight stigma with MASLD risk in a large cohort of obese workers across Spain.

Introduction: Weight and diabetes stigma among healthcare professionals (HCPs) may negatively impact treatment decisions, patient outcomes, and physician-patient interactions. We assessed the relationship between weight stigma, diabetes stigma, perceptions of healthcare quality, and avoidance of healthcare among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Methods: This observational, online survey-based study included 857 US adults with T2D.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has caused huge economic losses to swine industry but there is no effective antiviral drug. Nucleocapsid (N) protein is highly conserved in type 2 PRRSV and is considered as an important target for antiviral development. Mini-binders are novel protein drugs de novo designed for a specific protein target using a computational approach, which has great application prospects.

Obesity enhances ovarian cancer chemotherapy efficacy through C1q-mediated tumor targeting and immune activation.

Personalized protein corona significantly influences the biodistribution and therapeutic efficacy of nanomedicines, generating unique profiles that can impact treatment outcomes. Here, we demonstrate that pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) exhibits increased tumor accumulation and enhanced antitumor immunity in obese mice bearing ovarian tumor, inducing a greater capacity to inhibit tumor growth compared to normal mice. Mechanistically, the protein corona, particularly enriched with complement component 1q (C1q) in the plasma of obese mice, significantly enhances the internalization of PLD by ovarian cancer cells and elicits strong immunogenic cell death (ICD) effects.

Binding kinetics, bias, receptor internalization and effects on insulin secretion in vitro and in vivo of a novel GLP-1R/GIPR dual agonist, HISHS-2001.

Aims: The use of incretin analogues has emerged as an effective approach to achieve both enhanced insulin secretion and weight loss in Type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients. Agonists which bind and stimulate multiple receptors have shown particular promise. However, off-target effects remain a complication of using these agents, and modified versions with optimised pharmacological profiles and/or biased signalling are sought.
