The timing of exposure to testosterone produces activational and organizational effects in vertebrates. Evidence in female birds and mammals suggests that high serum testosterone levels, and the exposure to high testosterone levels during early development, are negatively associated with female fertility and sexual attractiveness to males. We tested these hypotheses by examining associations between serum testosterone levels (an indirect index of activational effects), anogenital distance (AGD, a direct index of organizational effects), the number of male mating partners attained by females, and the number of offspring weaned. We examined 160 wild degu (Octodon degus) females during the mating season, and 308 females during the nursing season, across an 11-year study. During the mating season, we found no association between female serum testosterone levels or AGD on the number of male mating partners, and on the number of offspring weaned. However, we found that the number of male mating partners was positively associated with the number of offspring weaned, suggesting that females attain direct fitness benefits from polyandrous mating. During the nursing season, we recorded a positive association between female AGD and the number of offspring weaned. This indicates that testosterone organizational effects positively impact female fertility. This finding is unique and adds to the theoretical framework of female phenotypical masculinization via intrauterine position phenomenon.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore contributing factors identified in serious incident investigations conducted by internal, independent multidisciplinary teams.
Methods: A total of 166 serious incident investigation reports, conducted between 2018 and 2023 in 11 integrated social and health care organizations in Finland, were analyzed. The reports were classified by incident type and contributing factor, which were analyzed using the WHO's Conceptual Framework for the International Classification for Patient Safety.

Since the release of the Supreme Court decision in June 2022, researchers have been working to better understand the impact that the growing number of abortion restrictions are having on the provision of and access to abortion services in the United States (US). Less is known about the impact of abortion restrictions on the provision of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services more broadly, including at clinics that do not directly offer abortion. Between November 2023 and February 2024, we conducted interviews with SRH managers, clinic managers, and other administrators at publicly funded SRH clinics around the US to generate evidence on the effects of state-level abortion restrictions on the provision of abortion and related services, such as pregnancy options counselling and abortion referrals, at facilities providing contraceptive services.

The Mediterranean Basin, a hotspot for tomato production, is one of the most vulnerable areas to climate change, where rising temperatures and increasing soil and water salinization represent major threats to agricultural sustainability. Thus, to understand the molecular mechanisms behind plant responses to this stress combination, an RNA-Seq analysis was conducted on roots and shoots of tomato plants exposed to salt (100 mM NaCl) and/or heat (42°C, 4 h each day) stress for 21 days. The analysis identified over 8000 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) under combined stress conditions, with 1716 DEGs in roots and 2665 in shoots being exclusively modulated in response to this specific stress condition.

Objectives: The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in England introduced early value assessments (EVAs) as an evidence-based method of accelerating access to promising health technologies that could address unmet needs and contribute to the National Health Service's Long Term Plan. However, there are currently no published works considering differences and commonalities in methods used between Assessment Reports for EVAs.
Methods: This rapid scoping review included all completed EVAs published on the NICE website up to 23 July 2024.
