Article Abstract

Introduction: Emerging evidence indicates that whole-body vibration (WBV) may be a relevant adjunct in interventions targeting overweight and obese individuals. Moreover, WBV has been applied in combination with other exercise modalities and therapeutic strategies, with various physiological responses observed in this population.

Objective: The current systematic review aimed to assess the physiological effects of WBV with other modalities of exercises in overweight and obese individuals.

Methods: Searches in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases were conducted to assess physiological responses to the combination of WBV with other modalities of exercises in overweight and obese individuals. Publications were identified and the screening was performed by two reviewers, independently. Irrelevant studies were excluded based on the eligibility criteria.

Results: Seven studies, analyzing different outcomes, were included, with a mean methodological quality score of 7. Four studies analyzed the acute effect and three studied the cumulative effect, with different intervention protocols. Increases in growth hormone (GH) concentrations and bioelectrical phase angles, and reductions in fat mass, blood triglycerides, and cholesterol concentrations, as well as blood pressure, heart rate, and arterial stiffness, were reported.

Conclusions: WBV combined with other exercise modalities seems to promote important physiological responses in overweight and obese individuals. However, more large-scale, long-term randomized controlled trials with WBV and other modalities of exercises in overweight and obese cohorts are needed to corroborate and expand the findings of the current systematic review.

Purpose Of Review: Despite major advances in the treatment and prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), a substantial burden of residual risk remains Obesity has been redefined as a primary and independent drivers of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality warranting focused attention.

Recent Findings: Obesity is now recognized as a chronic disease and a central contributor to residual cardiovascular risk through mechanisms including systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and endothelial dysfunction. This review addresses the limitations of conventional obesity management and highlights emerging pharmacological therapies targeting the underlying adiposopathy.

Background: The influence of obesity and sex on outcomes in pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains unclear. The association between obesity (body mass index [BMI], ≥30) and biologic sex (male or female) for outcomes in patients with PDAC undergoing a surgery-first approach was investigated.

Methods: A prospectively maintained pancreatic cancer database at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center was queried to identify all patients undergoing surgery with a pathologic diagnosis of PDAC.

Background: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of daily consumption of white potatoes compared with white rice on cardiometabolic health in individuals with type-2 diabetes (T2D).

Objective: To determine the effects of white potato consumption compared to white rice (a commonly consumed refined grain) on indices of glycemic control and cardiovascular health in individuals with overweight or obesity and T2D.

Methods: In this randomized crossover study, comparative control trial, 24 adults with T2D [45-80 y, body mass index (kg/m) 25-40] consumed baked white potatoes (100 g) or calorie-matched white rice (75 g) daily for 12 wk, separated by a 2-wk washout, with assessments of glycemic control, lipids, inflammation, blood pressure, endothelial function, and body composition at baseline (only 1 baseline visit included as a covariate in statistical analyses), 6 wk, and 12 wk.

Background: Airway obstruction is a characteristic spirometric finding in asthma but the clinical significance of other abnormal spirometric patterns is less well described. We aimed to explore pre- and post-bronchodilator (BD) prevalences and clinical characteristics of preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm), dysanapsis and airflow obstruction with low forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV) in children diagnosed with asthma.

Methods: We extracted specialist care data (clinical and spirometry) from the Swedish National Airway Register (n=3301, age 5-17 years).

The vascular endothelium is responsible for regulating vascular tone, maintaining fluid homeo-stasis, and preventing platelet aggregation, exhibits regulatory properties in vasorelaxation and vasoconstriction - it produces, among others, nitric oxide and endothelin. The imbalance of vasoactive molecules leads to the loss of their function, known as endothelial dysfunction. Impaired endothelial function is observed in people with metabolic disorders, often preceding the onset of the disease by several years.
