Article Abstract

Three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs) have been the subject of extensive research, primarily emphasizing their surface and bulk properties. Surface state transport is highly sought after due to its spin-momentum locking; however, in real systems, mixing between surface and bulk states often occurs because of defect states present in the bulk band gap. In this study, we provide a detailed electronic characterization of the 3D TI BiSbTeSe(BSTS), which exhibits pronounced surface transport effects. We observe a connection between the nonlinear Hall (NLH) effect at first order and quantum coherent transport, as evidenced by weak anti-localization. Our results show that NLH is a more sensitive technique to multi-channel transport in 3D TIs, thereby clearly distinguishing the temperature regime over which bulk and surface states dominate the transport dynamics. Additionally, we investigate the influence of magnetic impurities within the crystal structure on this phenomenon. Our study systematically elucidates the significance of multichannel transport, which is essential to understand the transport properties in presence of an external magnetic field.

The defining property of eukaryotic cells is the storage of heritable genetic material in a nuclear compartment. For eukaryotic cells to carry out the myriad biochemical processes necessary for their function, macromolecules must be efficiently exchanged between the nucleus and cytoplasm. The nuclear pore complex (NPC) - which is a massive assembly of ~35 different proteins present in multiple copies totalling ~1,000 protein subunits and architecturally conserved across eukaryotes - establishes a size-selective channel for regulated bidirectional transport of folded macromolecules and macromolecular assemblies across the nuclear envelope.

Dysregulated dopaminergic signaling has been implicated in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) and childhood sexual abuse (CSA), but inconsistencies abound. In a multimodal PET-functional MRI study, harnessing the highly selective tracer [C]altropane, we investigated dopamine transporter availability (DAT) and resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) within reward-related regions among 112 unmedicated individuals (MDD: n = 37, MDD/CSA: n = 18; CSA no MDD: n = 14; controls: n = 43). Striatal DAT and seed-based rsFC were assessed in the dorsal and ventral striatum and the ventral tegmental area.

Sodium-glucose Cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors are oral antidiabetic drugs that were developed for the treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus and are now also approved for treating chronic heart failure and chronic kidney disease. By inhibiting SGLT‑2 in the proximal renal tubule, urinary excretion of glucose is increased. Large randomized trials have demonstrated improved glycemic control, reduced cardiovascular events and lower mortality but also an increased risk of urogenital infections and dehydration.
