Article Abstract

Aim: To investigate the response of the anterior and posterior corneal surface in femtosecond laser-assisted convex stromal lenticule addition keratoplasty (SLAK) combined with cross-linking (CXL) for treating keratoconus at the first 3mo of follow-up.

Methods: In this prospective observational study, 20 eyes of 20 keratoconus patients who underwent SLAK combined with CXL were included. The morphological indices in keratometry and elevation data were recorded from the Sirius at baseline and 1 and 3mo postoperatively. The mean values of maximum keratometry (K), flat keratometry (K), and steep keratometry (K) at the central, 3-mm, 5-mm, and 7-mm areas were measured from the curvature map. The changes in anterior and posterior corneal elevation under the best-fit sphere (BFS) radius at seven points horizontally of the center, 3-mm, 5-mm, and 7-mm area from the center at both nasal (N) and temporal (T) side were measured from elevation map.

Results: For the front corneal curvature, K, and K at 3-mm, 5-mm, and 7-mm of the anterior corneal surface increased significantly 1mo postoperatively (all <0.05) and remained unchanged until 3mo (>0.05). For the back corneal curvature, K and K along the 3-mm back meridian significantly decreased after month 1 (=0.002, 0.077, respectively). Posterior K-readings along the 5-mm and 7-mm did not change after surgery (>0.05). Anterior BFS decreased 1mo (<0.001) postoperatively but remained unchanged until 3mo after SLAK (>0.05). There was no change in posterior BFS before and after the surgery (>0.05). Anterior elevation at N5, N3, central, and T5 points and posterior elevation at central and T7 points shifted backward 1mo postoperatively (all <0.05) and remained stable until 3mo (>0.05).

Conclusion: The myopic SLAK combined with CXL is an economical alternative for stabilizing the corneal surface in severe keraoconus. "Pseudoprogression" occurs in the early phase postoperatively, but it is not an indicator of keratoconus progression.

This review analyzes Russian and international literature on the treatment of bilateral limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), focusing on the use of Simple Oral Mucosal Epithelial Transplantation (SOMET) as a surgical method for restoring the ocular surface. Contemporary sources report 64 cases of SOMET used in the treatment of bilateral LSCD: 35 cases of chemical burns, 16 of thermal burns, 7 cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, 1 keratitis, 1 cicatricial pemphigoid, 1 dermoid, 1 case of drug-induced LSCD (mitomycin C), etc. Notably, all transplantations resulted in complete epithelialization, and in 3 cases, penetrating keratoplasty was subsequently performed with favorable functional and anatomical outcomes.

Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and inflammatory modulatory effects of combined 0.01% atropine eye drops and orthokeratology (OK) lenses in controlling myopia progression among adolescent patients.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed clinical data from 90 adolescent patients (90 eyes) with myopia treated from April 2021 to June 2023.

Background: The global increase in diabetes mellitus has been accompanied by a significant rise in related complications. Diabetic patients frequently experience ocular surface disorders and multiple studies have demonstrated that the diabetic corneal epithelium is characterized by increased cellular fragility and compromised barrier integrity. It has been demonstrated that the processes of oxidative stress and inflammation are pivotal in causing ocular tissue damage in diabetic patients.

Introduction: Chronic ocular surface pain (COSP) is defined as ocular pain that is perceived to originate from the ocular surface and persists for more than 3 months. Clear epidemiological data on COSP prevalence are lacking.

Methods: In 2025, a total of 100 eye care providers were surveyed, including 50 optometrists and 50 ophthalmologists.

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa, 200 Hawkins Dr, 11290A PFP, Iowa City, IA, 52242, USA.

Purpose: To study clinical characteristics and outcomes of penetrating keratoplasty (PK) and deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) wound dehiscence.

Methods: This retrospective case series assessed PK and DALK recipients with wound dehiscence at a single institution. We evaluated relationships between dehiscence etiologies, transplant indications, ocular/systemic comorbidities, keratoplasty type, and adverse post-dehiscence outcomes, especially graft failure and visual loss.
