Article Abstract

This systematic review evaluated the association between lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in infancy with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus (RV) or infestation with helminths and the risk of developing asthma and allergic diseases. The risk of bias was assessed with ROBINS-E, and the certainty of evidence (CoE) with GRADE. Meta-analysis applied a random-effects model. RSV LRTI is likely associated with an increased risk of developing asthma by age 7 (OR 3.02, 95% CI 2.23-4.09; I = 98%; moderate CoE). The impact on wheezing, atopic dermatitis (AD), and allergic rhinitis is uncertain. RV LRTI may be associated with increased risk of developing asthma (OR 8.40, 95% CI 2.56-27.55; I = 43%; low CoE). The impact on wheezing and AD is uncertain. Trichuris trichiura infestation might be associated with reduced risk of new-onset wheezing (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.35-0.94; very low CoE) or AD (HR: 0.35, 95% CI 0.18-0.67; very low CoE). The association between Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm infestation and the risk of developing asthma or AD is uncertain. Infestation with any helminths might be associated with reduced risk of new-onset asthma by age 5 (OR: 0.60, 95% CI 0.38-0.95; very low CoE) and wheezing (OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.51-0.95; very low CoE). More high-quality studies are needed to confirm these findings.

The fraction that the elderly represent in the world's population is growing rapidly; numerous alterations that impact all organs and systems, including the immune system, are related to aging. A complex process common in the elderly, known as immunosenescence, is characterized by a decreased ability to respond to vaccination as well as an increased risk of bacterial and viral infections, autoimmune, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. These processes are associated with alterations in the innate and adaptive immune system and lead to a condition of chronic low-grade inflammation, referred to as inflammaging.

Colloidal Lignin Particles (CLPs), with their polyphenolic structure, are promising sustainable alternatives to chemical UV filters. This study investigates the photochemical behavior of CLPs under ultraviolet irradiation synthetized from five different technical raw lignins (Alkali, Organosolv, two Enzymatic Hydrolyzed and Softwood Kraft Lignin) via solvent-shift procedure. The suspensions were irradiated using a self-developed UV-pen set-up and a commercially available UV chamber, enabling controlled UV exposure over time.

Background: Sotrovimab is a neutralising monoclonal antibody targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of sotrovimab in the RECOVERY trial, an investigator-initiated, individually randomised, controlled, open-label, adaptive platform trial testing treatments for patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19.

Methods: Patients admitted with COVID-19 pneumonia to 107 UK hospitals were randomly assigned (1:1) to either usual care alone or usual care plus a single 1 g infusion of sotrovimab, using web-based unstratified randomisation.

Background: Cystinosis is a rare genetic disorder, with the majority of patients suffering from infantile nephropathic cystinosis, the most severe form. If left untreated, cystinosis causes serious morbidity, initially through progressive kidney and eye disease, followed by systemic and multiorgan involvement, ultimately leading to premature death. In this systematic review, we summarize the evidence for cystinosis to support the development of an evidence-based clinical practice guideline (SELECT - S3 guideline for cystinosis).

The performance of Ti6Al4V alloy in engineering and biomedical applications is often limited by its poor wear and abrasion resistance, especially when compared to conventional materials such as CoCr-based alloys and stainless steels. In biomedical implants, such as hip and knee joints, this limitation results in a typical service life of only 10-15 years. Cryogenic treatment has emerged as a potential method to enhance the wear resistance of Ti6Al4V.
