Childhood adversity is associated with negative mental health outcomes. Research proposes sensitive periods for the effects of adversity on brain development, yet little is known about the developmental timing effects of abuse and neglect on neural mechanisms underlying risk-related decision making. This study examined 1) trajectories of neural connectivity during risk processing, and 2) how abuse and neglect during early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence are associated with changes in functional connectivity during risk processing. A sample of 167 adolescents were assessed annually for six years (mean age 14-20 years). Adolescents completed a lottery choice task during a functional magnetic resonance imaging scan (fMRI) and reported maltreatment experiences between ages 1 and 18. Generalized psychophysiological interactions (gPPI) was used to examine task-based functional connectivity in the insula and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) during risk processing. Growth curve models revealed increases in insula-dACC connectivity strength across adolescence. Chronic abuse statistically predicted weaker insula-dACC connectivity in late adolescence, and no significant sensitive periods emerged. Results suggest abuse may be linked to delayed maturation in salience network connectivity during risk processing and highlight the importance of distinguishing between effects of abuse and neglect on neural connectivity involved in risk-related decision making.

The fraction that the elderly represent in the world's population is growing rapidly; numerous alterations that impact all organs and systems, including the immune system, are related to aging. A complex process common in the elderly, known as immunosenescence, is characterized by a decreased ability to respond to vaccination as well as an increased risk of bacterial and viral infections, autoimmune, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. These processes are associated with alterations in the innate and adaptive immune system and lead to a condition of chronic low-grade inflammation, referred to as inflammaging.

Ageing is one of the most significant risk factors for heart disease; however, it is still not clear how the human heart changes with age. Taking advantage of a unique set of pre-mortem, cryopreserved, non-diseased human hearts, we performed omics analyses (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics), coupled with biologically informed computational modelling in younger (≤ 25 years old) and older hearts (≥ 50 years old) to describe the molecular landscape of human cardiac ageing. In older hearts, we observed a downregulation of proteins involved in calcium signalling and the contractile apparatus.

Among the various types of tumors, breast cancer (BC) has a high distribution in the world population and is responsible for a high mortality rate. Like other forms of cancer, BC is characterised by distinctive features such as high-energy metabolism in tumor cells, genetic mutations, and mitochondrial dysfunction that sometimes make conventional therapies less effective. However, there is a growing awareness of the vital role played by diet therapy in the overall management of the patient with BC, both by supporting standard therapy and by directly targeting aberrant biological processes involved in carcinogenesis.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of CT planning on surgical myectomy outcomes in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) and/or mid-cavity obstruction, by comparing these outcomes with those of conventional surgical myectomy.
Methods: This prospective cohort study included patients who underwent surgical septal myectomy for HCM with LVOT and/or mid-cavity obstruction between January 2019 and May 2024 at a single tertiary center. In the CT-planned myectomy group, an expert radiologist simulated the target myectomy site through a series of post-processing methods to plan the surgical approach, provide a surgeon's view that closely resembles the actual perspective in the operating room, and present the target myectomy volume.
