Article Abstract

Tea ( is the most widely consumed beverage in the world, with an excellent source of bioactive compounds such as catechins, caffeine, and epigallocatechin. There is an increasing trend to extract these bioactive compounds to deliver them as value-added products. Generally, the extraction of polyphenols and other functional compounds from different parts of tea is carried out using different solvents (e.g., water, water-ethanol, ethanol, methanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, and acetonitrile). The extraction efficiency of functional compounds from tea depends on the type and polarity of the solvent as well as the applied process. Several conventional techniques, such as boiling, heating, Soxhlet, and cold extraction, are used to extract bioactive ingredients. However, these procedures are unsuitable for achieving high yields and biological activities due to the long extraction times of cold brewing and the high temperatures in other heating methods. Many efforts have been carried out in food and pharmaceutical industries to replace conventional extraction techniques with innovative technologies (e.g., microwave (MAE), ultrasonic (UAE), pressurized liquid (PLE), pulsed electric field (PEF), and supercritical fluid (SFE)), which are fast, safe, energy-saving, and can present eco-friendly characteristics. These innovative extraction techniques have proven to improve the recovery rate of phenolic-based antioxidant compounds from tea and increase their extraction efficiency. In this review, the application of novel processing technologies for the extraction of value-added compounds from tea leaves is reviewed. The advantages and drawbacks of using these technologies are also highlighted.

Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), linked to lipid dysregulation, poses global health risks. 2,2',3,4,4',5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB138) is a persistent organic pollutant that poses potential threats to liver health due to its environmental persistence and bioaccumulation. Theabrown (TB), a natural compound extracted from black tea, exhibits lipid-lowering and antioxidant properties, but its protective effects on PCB138-induced liver injury have not been thoroughly investigated.

In the search for novel succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors (SDHIs) fungicides for managing rice sheath blight (RSB) and sclerotinia stem rot (SSR), 28 pyrazole-4-carboxamides incorporating stilbene or diphenylacetylene scaffolds were synthesized and evaluated for antifungal activities. The results showed that compound exhibited the most promising antifungal efficacy against and with EC (half maximal effective concentration) values of 0.004 and 0.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the predominant bioactive compound in green tea, has shown promise in lung cancer treatment; however, its molecular targets and antitumor mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, the therapeutic potential of EGCG against non-small cell lung (NSCLC) was evaluated, core targets were prioritized via network pharmacology, and molecular docking were employed to decipher the potential mechanism of action. Using bioinformatics, molecular docking, and functional enrichment analyses, 224 NSCLC-related targets were identified, with TP53, STAT3, AKT1, IL6, HSP90AA1, and JUN emerging as central hubs.

Acanthopanax sessiliflorus, belonging to the Araliaceae family, is used as medicinal herbs and dietary supplements, and can be consumed as seasoned vegetables, salads, pickles, functional tea, and wine. Their edible parts (shoots, leaves, fruis, and stems) are considered as a highly valuable food source with health benefits. The comparison of the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of functional compounds in these plant parts is still limited.

Tea is consumed worldwide, and it is highly appreciated by consumers as a functional, healthy, and natural drink. The objectives of this research were to evaluate (1) the storage stability and (2) the consumption effect on biomarkers of oxidative stress of an antioxidant tea prepared from purple corn cob and stevia (AOxTea). The AOxTea bags were subjected to storage environments of 75 or 85 % of relative humidity at 30, 40 and 50 °C for up to 19 days.
