Purpose: Both the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and fibularis tertius (FT) muscles exhibit a wide range of morphological variations.
Methods: A 70-year-old male cadaver was subjected to routine anatomical dissection for research and teaching purposes.
Results: The EDL had a markedly smaller fleshy belly, whereas the FT appeared hypertrophic. The EDL tendon displayed an atypical elongation and bifurcated into only three distinct slips, which inserted into the dorsal digital expansions of the second, third, and fourth toes. In contrast, the FT tendon was remarkably well-developed and divided into two slips. The lateral slip attached to the dorsal aspect of the base of the fifth metatarsal, while the medial slip extended distally to integrate into the dorsal digital expansion of the fifth toe.
Conclusion: In injuries involving tendon incisions, clinicians should consider EDL variations to ensure proper tendon restoration. The FT muscle flap and tendon grafts are commonly used to correct ankle joint laxity and foot drop. Understanding variations in the EDL and FT is crucial for surgical planning.

Background: Extensor indicis proprius (EIP) transfer augmented with proximal extensor pollicis longus (EPL) stump lengthening restores thumb extension and optimizes function in cases of chronic EPL tendon ruptures, which impair hand dexterity and fine motor skills. Traditional EIP-to-EPL transfers often disrupt the natural oblique course of the EPL around the Lister tubercle, leading to functional deficits. This dual-tendon transfer preserves anatomical alignment and improves thumb biomechanics, enhancing extension strength and the adduction moment arm at the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint.

Background: Hemi-hamate osteochondral grafting is a surgical technique that is utilized to reconstruct the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint in cases of unstable dorsal fracture-dislocation with >50% articular surface involvement. However, hemi-hamate osteochondral grafting can be technically challenging, has been reported to have various technical modifications, and can lead to complications such as overstuffing of the joint. This surgical technique article describes successful PIP joint reconstruction with use of a hemi-capitate osteochondral graft, which may offer a viable alternative to hemi-hamate osteochondral graft.

Collagen type XX alpha 1 (COL20A1) was recently found to be highly concentrated in perisynaptic Schwann cells (PSCs), the synaptic glia of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), suggesting that COL20A1 plays important roles in PSCs and at the NMJ. To investigate this possibility, we generated mice lacking Col20a1 only in Schwann cells (Col20a1-SCKO) and globally (Col20a1-gKO). PSCs and NMJs were morphologically unchanged in adult Col20a1-SCKO mice despite these conditional mice exhibiting gait abnormalities.

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic potential of intermuscular coherence (IMC) measured from leg muscle pairs as an early-stage biomarker for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Methods: Surface electromyography (sEMG) was recorded in neurotypical subjects and patients with early-stage ALS from muscle pairs: gastrocnemius lateralis-gastrocnemius medialis (GLGM), tibialis anterior-extensor digitorum brevis (TAED), and vastus lateralis-vastus medialis (VLVM). IMC within the 20-40 Hz range (IMCβγ) and the imaginary component of coherency in the 20-40 Hz range (ICOHβγ) were calculated.

Introduction: The Environmental Enrichment (EE) promotes systemic responses through social, cognitive, sensory, and physical stimuli. However, its effects on hepatic and muscle oxidative balance, as well as on serum inflammation markers, remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate whether three weeks of EE could modulate hepatic and muscular oxidative balance and the inflammatory response in female C57BL/6 mice.
