Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (hBMP-2) serves as a critical regulator in bone and cartilage formation; however, its industrial application is hindered by its inherent tendency to form inclusion bodies in prokaryotic expression systems. To address this issue, we established a recombinant hBMP-2 (rhBMP-2) expression system using the pCold II plasmid and the SHuffle T7 strain. We explored several strategies to enhance the solubility of rhBMP-2, including coexpression with molecular chaperones, vesicle-mediated secretory expression, fusion expression with synthetic intrinsically disordered proteins (SynIDPs), and fusion expression with small-molecule peptide tags.

Purpose: The accuracy of oral microbiome research depends significantly on specimen sampling protocols, as well as their storage and preservation. Traditional methods, such as freezing, may not only involve logistical hurdles but can also impact the quality of microbial data, leading to difficulties in the comparability between different studies. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the room temperature nucleic acid preservation protocol using DNA/RNA Shield buffer as compared to standard freezing in preserving oral microbial communities over the course of 7 days.

Gut barrier loss exacerbated gut microbiota dysbiosis by permitting pathogenic blooms, while gut microbiota dysbiosis caused the development of gut mucosal wounds by reducing mucus and breaking down epithelial tight junction. Current therapies combating colitis often fail to address both gut barrier dysfunction and microbial imbalance. Herein, inspired by natural gut mucus, a dual-crosslinked hydrogel (HSMP-LA) composed of thiol/maleimide-modified hyaluronic acid together with co-loading of antimicrobial ε-polylysine (ε-PL) and larazotide acetate (LA) had been developed as an injectable artificial gut mucus to simultaneously restore barrier integrity and modulate gut microbiota.

Microbial-derived extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and iron minerals are ubiquitous in aquatic environments, and they can influence the fate of organic micropollutants such as 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2). However, the interactions between EPS and iron minerals, and their influence on EE2 photodegradation, are seldom addressed in the literature. This study explored the effects of EPS derived from different aerobic or anaerobic microbials on the reductive dissolution of ferrihydrite (Fhy) and subsequent EE2 photodegradation, with emphasis on the impact of Fe-EPS complexes formation.

Probiotics play a crucial role in colon cancer treatment by metabolizing prebiotics to generate short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Colon cancer patients are frequently propositioned to supplement with probiotics to enhance the conversion and utilization of prebiotics. Nevertheless, the delivery and colonization of probiotics is hindered by the harsh conditions of gastrointestinal tract (GIT).
