Approximately 60 million individuals worldwide are currently living with dementia. As the median age of the world's population rises, the number of dementia cases is expected to increase markedly, and to affect ∼150 million individuals by 2050. This will create a huge and unsustainable economic and social burden across the globe. Although promising pharmacological treatment options for Alzheimer's disease - the most common cause of dementia - are starting to emerge, dementia prevention and risk reduction remain vital. In this review, we present evidence from large-scale epidemiological studies and randomised controlled trials to indicate that adherence to healthy dietary patterns could improve cognitive function and lower dementia risk. We outline potential systemic (e.g. improved cardiometabolic health, lower inflammation, modified gut microbiome composition/metabolism, slower pace of aging) and brain-specific (e.g. lower amyloid- load, reduced brain atrophy and preserved cerebral microstructure and energetics) mechanisms of action. We also explore current gaps in our knowledge and outline potential directions for future research in this area. Our aim is to provide an update on current state of the knowledge, and to galvanise research on this important topic.

Mechanisms underlying cardiovascular, affective, and metabolic (CAM) multimorbidity are incompletely defined. We assessed how two risk factors-chronic stress (CS) and a Western diet (WD)-interact to influence cardiovascular function, resilience, adaptability, and allostatic load (AL); explore pathway involvement; and examine relationships with behavioral, metabolic, and systemic AL. Male C57Bl/6 mice (8 weeks old, n = 64) consumed a control (CD) or WD (12%-65%-23% or 32%-57%-11% calories from fat-carbohydrate-protein) for 17 weeks, with half subjected to 2 h daily restraint stress over the final 2 weeks (CD + CS and WD + CS).

Background: Evidence suggests that women should eat a healthy diet during pre-conception and pregnancy as this benefits their own health as well as reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases in offspring (such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular and mental health problems); however, previous work indicates that the recommendations are not being followed. This study aimed to understand: the facilitators and barriers to healthy food and diet practices during pre-conception and pregnancy; how these barriers could be addressed, and the changes required to facilitate good food practices.
Methods: The research used a qualitative approach; five online focus groups were undertaken with 19 women living across the UK who were trying to conceive, pregnant or had babies under 6-months old.

The present study explored associations between the five personality traits (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness) and dietary patterns of apparently healthy individuals. Demographic, anthropometric, dietary, and personality data were obtained from 480 adults, up to 45 years of age, through self-completed questionnaires. Dietary habits were assessed a validated for the population Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), whereas personality was evaluated with the validated Greek version of the 50-item International Personality Item Pool (IPIP).

Objective: This study analyzed data from the US population to examine how oral microbiome diversity and diet quality individually and synergistically affect frailty.
Methods: This study included 6,283 participants aged 20 years or older from the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 NHANES cycles. A frailty index (FI) consisting of 36 items was developed, with items related to nutritional status excluded.

Background: A plant-focused, healthy dietary pattern, such as the Mediterranean diet enriched with dietary fiber, polyphenols, and polyunsaturated fats, is well known to positively influence the gut microbiota. Conversely, a processed diet high in saturated fats and sugars negatively impacts gut diversity, potentially leading to weight gain, insulin resistance, and chronic, low-grade inflammation. Despite this understanding, the mechanisms by which the Mediterranean diet impacts the gut microbiota and its associated health benefits remain unclear.
