Article Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to determine feasibility and acceptability of a standardized hypnosis-oriented intervention for a mystical experience based on a conceptual framework including cognitive expectancy, demand characteristics, the induced hypnotic state, and the role of hypnotizability. Ten college student participants provided informed consent and underwent a hypnosis-based exercise designed to facilitate a mystical experience. The hypnosis-oriented intervention was provided in a setting similar to that used in psychedelic drug research. All participants were in the mid-to-high range of hypnotizability. Results revealed that the hypnosis-oriented intervention was feasible and acceptable based on a composite acceptability score of 9.45 and no dropouts. All participants indicated that they would participate again if given the opportunity. Additionally, 70% of participants met criteria for a "complete mystical experience" as measured by the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ30). While these results are encouraging, additional research is needed, including replication with a larger sample.

Background: Psychedelics can acutely induce mystical experiences and elevated positive mood, which may contribute to the potential benefits of psychedelic therapy. However, there remains limited understanding of the occurrence and importance of specific positive emotional experiences within psychedelic therapy. Therefore, we examined the effects of psychedelics on positive emotional experiences and their association with improvements in mental health.

Oceanic states of consciousness-characterized by ego dissolution, unity, and timelessness-have long occupied a liminal space between psychopathology and transcendence. This paper explores these states through the interdisciplinary lens of existential neuroscience, integrating insights from psychoanalysis, existentialism, affective neuroscience, and psychedelic research. Starting with the psychoanalytic tension between Freud's view of the oceanic feeling as a regressive illusion and Jung's framing of it as a transformative encounter with the unconscious, this paper examines how creative and mystical experiences often arise from this dissolution of self-boundaries.

Importance: Psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy may offer a novel approach to treating depression, anxiety, and existential distress in individuals with life threatening illnesses, where current treatments show limited efficacy.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy versus active placebo and psychotherapy in adults with life-threatening illnesses.

Design: Double-blind, randomized controlled phase 2b trial (RCT) with an open-label extension and 6-month follow-up (January 2020 - October 2023).

Near-death experiences (NDEs), a syndrome of experiences with mystical-type content classically arising in the context of life-threatening situations, are under-researched in terms of their relevance for acute medical care. We here discuss several reasons to raise the importance of conducting more comprehensive NDE research in emergency and critical care contexts, including but not limited to near-death experiencers' awareness of surroundings and the need for patient support given NDEs' profound psychological impacts, and we suggest incorporating the identification of NDEs into management plans. Exploring NDE incidence and their subsequent impact in acute settings may unveil a pathway toward favorable outcomes within clinical practice.

This qualitative study examines the impact of working for SisterWeb San Francisco Community Doula Network, a community-based doula organization, on Black and Pacific Islander doulas who provide culturally congruent support to individuals before, during, and after childbirth. We interviewed eight doulas at three timepoints (2020, 2021, and 2022). Participants described how their confidence as doulas grew while working at SisterWeb, partially due to gaining more experience as birth workers within a supportive learning environment.
