Vanadium and oxygen form a complex system of vanadium oxides with multiple phases and mixed valency, increasing the difficulty of characterization. In this work, amorphous vanadium oxide thin films with mixed valence states were fabricated by atomic layer deposition, and then post-annealing was conducted for crystalline films. For the surface analysis of this mixed-valence system, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) were employed. However, XPS is only able to quasi-quantitatively determine the surface-proximity oxidation states. To account for the inadequacy of surface-sensitive XPS and AES techniques, a surface oxidation model (SOM) was proposed for the ellipsometric modeling of the mixed-valence system. Furthermore, by conducting air thermal oxidation (ATO) experiments, the four sets of fitting parameters of SOM were decreased to three, lowering the system complexity. This study is expected to help with the analysis of vanadium oxide mixed-valence systems and other multivalent metal oxide systems.

Aqueous batteries have become a prospective future energy storage system because of their low coefficient of cost and stability. However, their lower energy density limits their applications. Ammonium ions (NH) have a small hydration radius and light molar mass, and aqueous ammonium ion batteries (AAIBs) are anticipated for solving the inherent low-energy density problem of aqueous batteries.

Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) is a leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, contributing to significant morbidity and mortality. Despite its growing prevalence, no FDA-approved pharmacological treatments exist, leaving lifestyle modifications as the primary intervention. AFLD pathogenesis involves a complex interplay of lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and inflammation, highlighting the need for innovative therapeutic approaches.

Surgical resection remains the frontline intervention for cancer; however, postoperative tumor recurrence and wound infection remain critical unmet challenge in surgical oncology. Herein, an all-in-one nanowired hydrogel (V-Hydrogel) is developed through a facile one-step assembly employing enzyme-mimetic VO nanowires and bactericidal crosslinker THPS. The V-Hydrogel reserves the glutathione peroxidase-, peroxidase-, catalase-, and oxidase-mimetic enzymatic activities derived from vanadium oxide nanowires, thereby exhibiting efficient tumor-specific catalytic therapy.

Using an Earth-abundant transition metal to mediate formation and splitting of C-C σ-bonds, in response to electrical stimuli, constitutes a promising strategy to construct complex organic skeletons. Here, we showcase how [ BuN][N] reacts with an isocyanide adduct of a tetrahedral and high-spin Ti complex, [(Tp )TiCl] (1), to enact N-atom transfer, C-N bond formation, and C-C coupling, to form a dinuclear complex, [(Tp )Ti{AdN(N)C-C(N)NAd}Ti(Tp )] (3), with two Ti ions bridged by a disubstituted oxalimidamide ligand ( Bu = -butyl, Tp = hydrotris(3--butyl-5-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate, Ad = 1-adamantyl). Magnetic and computational studies reveal two magnetically isolated d Ti ions, and electrochemical studies unravel a reversible two-electron oxidation at -0.

Pre-intercalation has emerged as a highly effective strategy to enhance structural integrity and ion transport kinetics in cathodes for aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Here, we report a zinc-ion pre-intercalated hydrate vanadium oxide cathode, in which the initial insertion of Zn induces a significant expansion of the interplanar spacing, followed by contraction at higher Zn concentrations owing to strong electrostatic interactions with the VO framework. Such competing expansion and contraction of interplanar spacing enhances the overall electrochemical properties.
