Article Abstract

Postoperative pain has many unwanted consequences as it delays immediate recovery and may be a factor leading to chronification of pain. Although many studies have shown a link between acute postoperative pain and persistent pain, many other factors may play a role. Maurice-Szamburski and colleagues have shown that acute postoperative pain is not directly associated with the occurrence of chronic pain, but that the pain component of the Evaluation du Vécu de l'Anesthésie Générale (EVAN-G) questionnaire is associated with this outcome. As EVAN-G is a questionnaire that focuses on the patient experience after surgery, this is in line with the suggestion that unidimensional pain scores are not sufficient to assess the quality of recovery, and that both clinical studies and practice should move towards a more holistic approach after surgery.

Background: Spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy by robotic surgery is a safe and feasible surgical technique. Currently, spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy represents an alternative to the classical distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy, in the case of benign and low-grade malignant diseases of the body or pancreas tail. The reasons for preserving the spleen are based on the reduction of postoperative complications, such as post-splenectomy infections, subphrenic abscess, portal thrombosis, pulmonary hypertension, thrombocytosis, and thromboembolism.

Objective: To compare 6- and 12-month results of femoral artery repair with xenopericardial and autologous venous patch in hybrid treatment of critical lower limb ischemia.

Material And Methods: A retrospective analysis included 60 patients with critical lower limb ischemia who underwent hybrid treatment (balloon angioplasty and stenting of iliac arteries and open reconstruction of femoral arteries). Patients were divided into 2 groups by 30 people depending on femoral artery repair (group 1 - autologous venous patch, group 2 - xenopericardial patch).

Soft-Tissue Sources of Extra-articular Pain Following Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Comprehensive Review.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg Glob Res Rev

September 2025

From the American Hip Institute Research Foundation (Dr. Quesada-Jimenez, Dr. Kahana-Rojkind, and Dr. Domb), and the American Hip Institute, Chicago, IL (Dr. Domb).

Hip pain after a total hip arthroplasty is a prevalent condition. Once aseptic loosening and infection have been ruled out, the possible entities are vast. Accurate diagnosis in this patient population is challenging because they might present in different stages of their recovery process and the potential overlap of some conditions.

One-fifth of adults who receive a total knee replacement (TKR) go on to develop chronic pain. The behavioural approach taken to find a solution to pain may vary from assimilative (pursuit of analgesia) to accommodative (acceptance of pain insolubility and adoption of alternative goals). A total of 313 patients participated in a trial of an enhanced care pathway for TKR reported pain at 3 months after surgery.

Bertolotti Syndrome in the Pediatric Population: A Literature Review and Management Algorithm.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg Glob Res Rev

September 2025

From the Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA (Gabriel, Hines, and Prabhat); the Lenox Hill Hospital, New York, NY (Dr. Ang); and the Boston Children's Hospital, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Boston, MA (Dr. Liu and Dr. Hogue).

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive step-wise management algorithm for Bertolotti syndrome in the pediatric population by conducting a systematic review of the current literature regarding the diagnostic evaluation, nonsurgical and surgical treatment, and outcomes.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using PubMed to identify studies focused on the management of Bertolotti syndrome in the pediatric population. Data extraction of clinical presentation, management strategies, imaging, and outcomes was completed.
