Lupin crops provide nutritious seeds as an excellent source of dietary protein. However, extensive genomic resources are needed for crop improvement, focusing on key traits such as nutritional value and climate resiliency, to ensure global food security based on sustainable and healthy diets for all. Such resources can be derived either from related lupin species or crop wild relatives, which represent a large and untapped source of genetic variation for crop improvement. Here, we report genome assemblies of the cross-compatible species Lupinus cosentinii (Mediterranean) and its pan-Saharan wild relative L. digitatus, which are well adapted to drought-prone environments and partially domesticated. We show that both species are tetraploids, and their repetitive DNA content differs considerably from that of the main lupin crops L. angustifolius and L. albus. We present the complex evolutionary process within the rough-seeded lupins as a species-based model involving polyploidization and rediploidization. Our data also provide the foundation for a systematic analysis of genomic diversity among lupin species to promote their exploitation for crop improvement and sustainable agriculture.

Background And Aims: Crop wild relatives (CWRs) are key resources for enhancing agricultural resilience, providing genetic traits that can improve pest resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, and nutritional composition in domesticated crops. Within the mustard family (Brassicaceae) this is especially significant in the Brassiceae tribe, which includes economically important genera for agriculture such as Brassica and Sinapis. However, while breeding programmes have historically focused on major crops within this tribe, the potential of their wild relatives, particularly for underutilised and minor crops, remains insufficiently explored.

The aim of the study was to reduce the chemical fertilizers with microbial inoculant-rich vermicompost, which enhanced the growth, flowering, and soil health of the tuberose crop. A total of six treatments were applied with reducing doses of synthetic fertilizers under a factorial randomized design and replicated thrice. In this study, vermicompost (VC) made from cow dung and vegetable waste utilizing Eisenia foetida and their mixed biomass were enriched with microbial inoculants and assessed for their impact on microbial and enzymatic populations including urease, acid phosphatase activity and dehydrogenase activity in soil, nutrient availability, and tuberose development and flowering.

While PGPB have historically been applied in agriculture, their formal recognition in the last century has driven intensive research into their role as sustainable tools for improving crop yield and stress tolerance.
