The Eastern Sudetes Mountains (Northern Moravia, Czech Republic) were among the most polluted regions of Europe due to toxic metal depositions and acid rain, until the desulfurization of emissions from coal power stations and reduction of heavy industry which took place in the 1990s. This study provides a comparison of data on the levels of calcium, lead, cadmium, and aluminum in soil, meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis) nestlings, and their available diet in 1994-1999 and in 2017-2019. The soil pH and exchangeable amount of calcium and lead increased slightly. The concentration of calcium in potential prey (invertebrates) increased slightly, and lead and cadmium levels decreased. The amount of calcium and lead in nestling bodies decreased in 2017-2019, while cadmium and aluminum levels remained unchanged after accounting for nestling age. The age of nestlings had an effect on aluminum only, when its content decreased with age. The principal component analysis revealed close association between calcium and lead. The consequences of recent leaching of basic cations, mainly calcium, and increasing bioavailability of lead in soils for future reproduction of the meadow pipit are discussed.

Background And Purpose: Neuroinflammation is increasingly recognised to contribute to drug-resistant epilepsy. Activation of ATP-gated P2X7 receptors has emerged as an important upstream mechanism, and increased P2X7 receptor expression is present in the seizure focus in rodent models and patients. Pharmacological antagonists of P2X7 receptors attenuate seizures in rodents, but this has not been explored in human neural networks.

Fahr's syndrome is a rare neurological condition marked by unusual calcifications in the basal ganglia and other brain regions, often resulting from metabolic disorders, such as hypoparathyroidism. Secondary hypoparathyroidism, a frequent complication of total thyroidectomy, can lead to Fahr's syndrome, manifesting as movement disorders, seizures, psychiatric symptoms and indications of calcium deficiency. This case report discusses a woman in her mid-30s who developed Fahr's syndrome due to secondary hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy.

Objective: We previously documented that exposure to a spectrum of elements is associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, there is a lack of mechanistic understanding as to how elemental mixtures contribute to the ASD development.
Materials And Methods: Serum and urinary concentrations of 26 elements and six biomarkers of ASD-relevant pathophysiologic pathways including serum HIPK 2, serum p53 protein, urine malondialdehyde (MDA), urine 8-OHdG, serum melatonin, and urine carnitine, were measured in 21 ASD cases and 21 age-matched healthy controls of children aged 6-12 years.
