Background And Objectives: The choice of the optimal surgical position in the treatment of posterior fossa lesions still remains a controversial and debated issue. Morphometric data on the different perspective of vision offered by different surgical position are scarce. This article investigated the differences due to the vision perspectives provided by the sitting and park bench positions.
Methods: The study was conducted using 4 fixed cadaver heads. A standardized retrosigmoid approach was performed on each side of each head. Three operators collected anatomic observation and 2 separate measurements each, for all the sides and diagonals of the projections of 2 areas delimited by the cranial nerves in the cerebellopontine angle (defined as working windows ABCD and ABEF). The collection of the measurements was repeated for each side of each head, both in the sitting and in the park bench positions. The average areas of the working windows were calculated for each position and then compared by statistical analysis.
Results: The park bench position is associated to larger areas for both working windows (P = .0013 for ABCD; P < .001 for ABEF) compared with the sitting position. These measures allow to quantify the differences of the working windows that are an indirect expression of the different angle of vision of each position.
Conclusion: Our cadaveric study shows that there is a better vision perspective offered by the park bench position for lesions that do not modify the course of the cranial nerves in the cerebellopontine angle. However, different positioning of patients presents different advantages and limitations for surgeon based on size of the tumor and lesion location. In our opinion, choice of patient positioning could be tailored to lesion's peculiarities more than on surgical habits.

In the zebrafish larval toxicity model, phenotypic changes induced by chemical exposure can potentially be explained and predicted by the analysis of gene expression changes at sub-phenotypic concentrations. The increase in knowledge of gene pathway-specific effects arising from the zebrafish transcriptomic model has the potential to enhance the role of the larval zebrafish as a component of Integrated Approaches to Testing and Assessment (IATA). In this paper, we compared the transcriptomic responses of triphenyl phosphate between two standard exposure paradigms, the Zebrafish Embryo Toxicity (ZET) and General and Behavioural Toxicity (GBT) assays.

Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)-based complex topological copolymers have attracted a great deal of attention for their unique electrical and optical properties. In this contribution, the P3HT-based Janus fibers with controlled lengths were innovatively prepared by sequential crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) of poly(--butylstyrene)--polyisoprene--poly(3-hexylthiophene) (PBS--PI--P3HT) triblock copolymer, cross-linking of the interlayer PI region, and dissociation of fibers in good solvent. The comprehensive characterizations showed that the PBS/P3HT Janus fibers have nearly half the width of PBS--PI--P3HT fibers and fiber lengths close to or slightly shorter than those of PBS--PI--P3HT fibers, indicating that the Janus fibers with adjustable lengths could be prepared in a large window range.

Delayed hemothorax (DHTX) is a possible sequelae of thoracic trauma, especially in the setting of patients being treated with anticoagulation. We report the case of an 81-year-old Caucasian man with a DHTX presenting 14 days following an initial emergency department (ED) visit with multiple rib fractures due to a fall from the patient's bed. Upon presentation to the ED a second time, the patient was hospitalized, tested positive for COVID-19, and on the second day of admission underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) without bleeding or other complications.

Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), mainly deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), persists as a critical contributor to hospital-acquired mortality. Despite its largely preventable nature, early 2024 data from Bon Secours Hospital in Cork revealed alarmingly low compliance with VTE prophylaxis protocol.
Aim: This study evaluated the implementation efficacy of VTE risk assessment and prophylaxis in adult hospitalised patients at Bon Secours Hospital, Cork, according to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.
