Flame synthesis using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as the precursor gas to produce carbon nanofibers (CNFs) is an economical alternative to conventional chemical vapor deposition methods using single-component fuels such as methane and ethylene. Though LPG is a commercially viable source for carbon-based nanomaterials, the understanding of the effects of a LPG flame on CNF growth is very limited. Therefore, the present study is to analyze the feasibility of CNF growth in a premixed LPG flame using a one-dimensional flame at varying equivalence ratios. The effects of flame equivalence ratio on the CNF morphology and crystallinity are then analyzed systematically. In the present study, a diffusion flame was used to check the stability of the flame at different flow rates, followed by establishing a premixed flat flame of LPG. An optimum height above burner of 10 mm at which the temperature is around 650 °C was used in the synthesis process. Zirconia beads impregnated with nickel nitrate catalyst have been employed. Dense CNF growth with an average diameter of 77.9 nm was observed at an equivalence ratio of 1.8; as the equivalence ratio was reduced to 1.6, the average diameter of CNF increased by 46% to 114 nm, with amorphous carbon observed. The said observation is due to the effects of the increased flame temperature as the equivalence ratio approaches stoichiometry conditions from the rich side. This increases the nucleation rate, which in turn increases the catalyst particle size and the amount of free carbon atoms, producing CNFs with larger diameters and amorphous carbon. According to Raman analysis, the grown CNFs have a high number of defects, which may be good for applications where defective nanomaterials are desirable to improve the component performance. The work has proven that flame synthesis of CNFs using commercial LPG is feasible, paving the way for further exploration into cost-efficient CNF production with potential industrial applications.

Background And Objective: With obese individuals experiencing osteoarthritis (OA) at early stages of life, hip resurfacing (HR) has emerged as an alternative to arthroplasty. The purpose is to conduct a short-term analysis on patients with obesity who underwent primary HR for OA compared to a benchmark control group of non-obese patients.
Materials And Methods: Patients with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2 who underwent HR from 2010 to 2021 were eligible for inclusion.
Objectives: To investigate whether quantitative retinal markers, derived from multimodal retinal imaging, are associated with increased risk of mortality among individuals with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), the most severe form of diabetic retinopathy.
Design: Longitudinal retrospective cohort analysis.
Setting: This study was nested within the AlzEye cohort, which links longitudinal multimodal retinal imaging data routinely collected from a large tertiary ophthalmic institution in London, UK, with nationally held hospital admissions data across England.

Using the stable synthetic analogue 3-aza-dehydroxylysyl-phosphatidylglycerol (3adLPG), the putative role of native staphylococcal LPG in inhibiting the antibiotic daptomycin from binding to its target phosphatidylglycerol (PG), was investigated with respect to interfacial interactions between these lipids, daptomycin, and calcium ions. The influence of lipid monolayer/bilayer composition and interfacial ion concentrations upon the structure and integrity of model membranes were probed after daptomycin challenge using a combination of surface x-ray scattering techniques and fluorescence assays. In models representing the membrane composition of the daptomycin susceptible phenotype consisting of PG/3adLPG in a 7:3 M ratio, calcium ions drive the formation of two separate phases; Ca cross-linked PG/PG pairs and PG/3adLPG ion pairs.

This study investigated the effects of tea tree oil (TTO) protective effects against diquat (DIQ)-induced toxicity in chickens. 240 one-day-old Hy-Line W-36 laying chickens randomly allocated to one of two treatment groups: 1) chickens fed a basal diet and 2) chickens fed a diet supplemented with 200 ppm TTO. At 20 days of age, half of the chickens in each group were intraperitoneally injected with DIQ (20 mg per kg body weight), whereas the other half were injected with an equivalent amount of PBS.

Where possible, antimicrobials, such as clindamycin, should be given orally rather than intravenously when efficacy will be equivalent. A single-centre pre-/post-intervention study was conducted. There were 11 134 patients admitted to included wards during the study period.
