Clinical trials often face the challenge of post-randomization events, such as the initiation of rescue therapy or the premature discontinuation of randomized treatment. Such events, called "intercurrent events" (ICEs) in ICH E9(R1), may influence the estimation and interpretation of treatment effects. According to ICH E9(R1), there are five strategies for handling ICEs. This study focuses on the composite strategy, which incorporates ICEs in the outcome of interest and defines the treatment effects using composite endpoints that combine the measured continuous variables and ICEs. An advantage of this strategy is that it avoids the occurrence of missing data because they are defined as part of the outcome of interest. In this study, we propose a new composite estimand: the difference in the partial areas under the curves (pAUCs) of the cumulative distribution function. While the pAUC is closely related to the trimmed mean approach proposed by Permutt and Li, it offers the advantage of allowing pre-specification of the cutoff value for a "good" response based on clinical considerations. This ensures that the pAUC can be calculated irrespective of the proportion of ICEs. We describe the causal interpretation of our method and its relationship with two other strategies (treatment policy and hypothetical strategies) using a potential outcome framework. We present simulation results in which our method performs reasonably well compared to several existing approaches in terms of type I error, power, and the proportion of undefined test statistics.

River water quality degradation is a prevailing problem in coastal China with intensifying human-nature interaction. However, the spatial and temporal dynamics of water quality and their drivers remain poorly understood. In this study, we developed an analytical framework integrating self-organizing mapping (SOM) with partial least squares structural equation models (PLS-SEMs) to analyze the patterns and drivers of river water quality at 49 stations from 2021 to 2023 in Fujian Province, a coastal region in southeastern China.

Language learning and use relies on domain-specific, domain-general cognitive and sensory-motor functions. Using fMRI during story listening and behavioral tests, we investigated brain-behavior associations between linguistic and non-linguistic measures in individuals with varied multilingual experience and reading skills, including typical reading participants (TRs) and dyslexic readers (DRs). Partial Least Square Correlation revealed a main component linking cognitive, linguistic, and phonological measures to amodal/associative brain areas.

Purpose: Crohn's disease (CD) is characterized by enteric inflammation, often resulting in strictures and penetrating complications, which may alter patient management prior to the initiation of biologic therapy. Our aim is to assess the frequency of missed stricturing and internal penetrating complications in CD patients on computed tomography enterography (CTE) and magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) performed prior to anti-TNF therapy.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients from two tertiary centers who underwent CTE\MRE within six months before starting anti-TNF therapy.

Conservation has embraced advances in big data and related digital technologies as key to preventing biodiversity loss, especially in the identification of areas of conservation priority based on spatial data, which we call the big geospatial data turn. This turn has led to the proliferation of useful methods and tools, including global geospatial maps. But these methods may also undermine moves toward rights-based and inclusive conservation approaches that consider plural values and perspectives.

Since 2020, cancer counselling centers (CCCs) have been eligible for funding from health insurance funds under the legal regulation on "Outpatient Cancer Counseling" (§65e SGB V). This article investigates the rationale for or against applying for funding and evaluates the funding option from the perspective of staff members at both funded and non-funded CCCs, as well as sponsoring organizations. The aim is to analyse the practical feasibility of the financing model.
