Bio-ethical issues of research in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Monash Bioeth Rev

September 2025

Department of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, College of Basic and Applied Sciences, University of Ghana, Legon, Accra, Ghana.

This paper examines bioethical considerations of research conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where a notable scarcity persists in literature addressing region-specific bioethical issues. Although bioethics-related activities have encountered challenges surpassing existing protocol safeguards, emerging evidence demonstrates growing recognition of integrated scientific and ethical principles within African medical research. Maintaining research continuity in resource-limited settings necessitates bridging critical gaps between informed consent procedures and participants' actual understanding.

The concept of complex trauma (or developmental trauma) has been proposed to refer both to chronic exposure to interpersonal experiences in children and adolescents and to the constellation of possible sequelae that cause significant difficulties throughout life. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the theoretical and clinical approaches to complex trauma in order to better understand the scope of this concept. Through a review of the literature, this chapter outlines the historical evolution of this concept, its current definition, the diagnostic issues involved, and the preferred directions for its future use in research and clinical practice.

[Development of an AI-based Positioning Technical Assistance System for Mammography].

Nihon Hoshasen Gijutsu Gakkai Zasshi

September 2025

Department of Radiological Technology, Faculty of Health Sciences, Gifu University of Medical Science.

Purpose: We aimed to develop an AI-based system to score the positioning in mammography (MG), with the goal of establishing a foundation for future technical support.

Methods: Using 800 mediolateral oblique (MLO) images, we developed an AI model (Mask Generation Model) for automatic extraction of three regions: the pectoralis major muscle, the mammary gland region, and the nipple. Using this model, we extracted three regions from 1544 MLO images and generated mask images.
