Neurosonography is an invaluable diagnostic tool for assessing the neonatal brain and typically includes grayscale and conventional Doppler imaging. Microvascular imaging (MVI) is an emerging imaging technique that offers promising potential in evaluating neonatal intracranial pathology. MVI allows for sensitive and detailed assessment of neurovascular anatomy that can be challenging to visualize with other imaging modalities. This enhanced visualization not only improves the reliability in identifying neurovascular landmarks but also allows more accurate identification and assessment of adjacent parenchymal and extra-axial structures. Our review aims to offer an atlas of neurovascular structures as visualized with MVI, intended as a reference for future research in this field. Here, we focus specifically on the appearance of the intracranial arterial circulation as seen on MVI.

Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) MRI is a contrast-agent-free microvascular imaging method finding increasing use in biomedicine. However, there is uncertainty in the ability of IVIM-MRI to quantify tissue microvasculature given MRI's limited spatial resolution (mm scale). Nine NRG mice were subcutaneously inoculated with human pancreatic cancer BxPC-3 cells transfected with DsRed, and MR-compatible plastic window chambers were surgically installed in the dorsal skinfold.

Background: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a life-threatening hematologic emergency caused by ADAMTS13 deficiency, leading to microvascular thrombosis, haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, and end-organ damage. Neurological symptoms occur in up to 90% of cases and are frequently misdiagnosed as stroke. Prompt recognition and treatment reduce the mortality rate from over 90% to 10-20%.

Background: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are a prevalent complication of diabetes, leading to significant morbidity, mortality, and amputation rates. Chronic non-healing DFU often result from peripheral neuropathy, microvascular issues, and infection, with poor blood and oxygen supply being critical factors in delayed healing. The development of new treatments to promote blood supply and accelerate ulcer healing is a significant area of research for DFU management.

Background: Early detection of hematological malignancies improves long-term survival but remains a critical challenge due to heterogeneity in clinical presentation. Chronic inflammation is a key driver in hematologic cancers and is known to induce compensatory microvascular changes. High-resolution, non-invasive retinal imaging can allow the quantification of microvascular changes for the early detection of hematological malignancies.
