Article Abstract

Sleep patterns, including duration and quality, are closely linked to cardiovascular health. This cross-sectional study of 100 participants aged 30-65 years assessed sleep patterns using validated questionnaires and measured cardiovascular health using the Framingham Risk Score. Short sleep duration (<6 hours) and poor sleep quality were significantly associated with higher cardiovascular risk (p < 0.001), while optimal sleep duration (7-8 hours) correlated with the lowest risk scores (p = 0.002). Long sleep duration also increased cardiovascular risk, particularly in individuals with conditions such as obesity and hypertension. These findings underscore the importance of promoting healthy sleep habits as a key strategy in preventing cardiovascular disease in the general population.

Rationale: Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) are used to identify genetic variants for association with schizophrenia (SCZ) risk; however, each GWAS can only reveal a small fraction of this association.

Objectives: This study systematically analyzed multiple GWAS data sets to identify gene subnetwork and pathways associated with SCZ.

Methods: We identified gene subnetwork using dmGWAS program by combining SCZ GWASs and a human interaction network, performed gene-set analysis to test the association of gene subnetwork with clinical symptom scores and disease state, meanwhile, conducted spatiotemporal and tissue-specific expression patterns and cell-type-specific analysis of genes in the subnetwork.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), a leading inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism, is frequently accompanied by sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances. In this study, we comprehensively characterized these disruptions and evaluated the therapeutic potential of a circadian-based intervention in the fragile X mental retardation 1 () knockout (KO) mouse. The KO mice exhibited fragmented sleep, impaired locomotor rhythmicity, and attenuated behavioral responses to light, linked to an abnormal retinal innervation and reduction of light-evoked neuronal activation in the suprachiasmatic nucleus.

Understanding how sleep affects the risk of incident chronic conditions in midlife may reinforce the importance of a healthy sleep pattern for healthy aging and cardiometabolic health. The objective of the study was to examine associations of sleep duration and quality with incident obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome in mid-aged adults. Participants without obesity ( = 381), diabetes ( = 509), or metabolic syndrome ( = 487) from the Biomarker Projects in Midlife in the United States study were examined separately for baseline sleep duration and quality and their associations with incident obesity, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome after an average follow-up of 12 years.

While deprescribing benzodiazepines and related drugs (BZRDs) is crucial for preventing prolonged use and their associated adverse effects, it presents challenges from a healthcare perspective, because of limited resources and time. Recently, a pharmacist-led deprescribing of BZRDs in the treatment of insomnia was introduced in Helsinki's primary care health centres. To explore pharmacists' and physicians' insights, qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted via Microsoft Teams with physicians and pharmacists involved in a pharmacist-led deprescribing.
